PhotosynthFolks, this is big!!! If you really investigate just one post on my blog, make it this one! It’s not often that I’m completely blown away by a new application, but the new Photosynth technology preview is the most groundbreaking advance in digital photography since… well, digital photography.

Photosynth reminds me of a scene from the movie Blade Runner. Some of you may recall the scene where Harrison Ford’s character is sitting in front of a screen examining a photo and he is able to “move around” in what appears to be a two dimensional space. Well, that’s the closest thing that I can describe to what we’ve got here.

Basically, this technology will allow us to put to good use the major advantage that digital photography offers - namely the ability to take tons and tons of images of a particular place or object. Photosynth will then examine all of those photos and assemble them into a navigable virtual 3D space.

  • The first thing to do is check out the main Photosynth page.
  • Next, make sure you watch the videos about the project.
  • Finally, check out the actual sample collections. I really enjoyed the Gary Faigin Art Studio. It offers an excellent ideal of one way to use this technology to give virtual tours. Every real estate agent on earth should be breaking down the door to get their hands on this so they can employ it with their sales listings.

I also imagine it being used to re-create crime scenes for law enforcement, and just many, many other things.

Mark my words, this is the birth of a disruptive technology. Once they finish the development to the point that they can release it to the general public it is going to change the way we all view our world.
