Mind you, I don't have any experience with this. ;-) I would suspect that they don't jump right to the breathalyzer because in the US the police would need "reasonable doubt" to perform one, and on top of that you can always refuse to take it! Now, that means a trip right to jail... but it still might be better than giving them the evidence they need to convict you down the road.
