One Man’s Blog

Specialization is for Insects.

GrandCentralGoogle recently acquired a company called GrandCentral, which I was preparing to do a review of anyway after testing the service out a bit. This only makes the offering all that much stronger, and in my opinion it’s something everyone should try out.

Here is the Google acquisition announcement which took about 2 seconds to download directly from my voice mail:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

GrandCentral links all of your phone numbers together and layers on a TON of new features. How? They are giving people One Number…for Life - a number that’s not tied to a phone or a location - but tied to you. This number will consolidate your voice messaging, route calls to wherever you are, and even allow you to screen your calls.

The Price is Right - Even Bob Can’t Believe It

The Price Is RightThis has to be the luckiest person who ever played the Price is Right. In fact, even Bob Barker said he just couldn’t believe it!

A young woman named Joy Herrera has her name called, gets on stage immediately, and begins to win everything in sight despite the fact that she is about to cause Bob a coronary.

Short Film - The End of the World

The End Of The WorldIn line with the environmental topics of earlier in the week, I came across this interesting little cartoon that addresses the issue of “action and reaction” when it comes to our personal habits.

The film does a good job of demonstrating how everything is interrelated while also delivering hope for the future. Enjoy…

The Truth About AT&T

The New ATTThis video is both hilarious and sad at the same time. I don’t want to spoil it by giving the details, but suffice it to say that Stephen Colbert is giving an overview on the history and future of AT&T…

OMB 3 Column FooterThis post describes how to add variable width, centered columns of stuff to the Worpress footer. Not sure what I mean? Well, look at the bottom of this site.

  • These columns are fluid width, so it works in different browser resolutions and as you resize the page the columns resize.
  • The columns maintain their centering on the page even as it is resized.
  • You can put anything you want in the columns, though I’ve got text and lists in them for demonstration purposes.
  • It should work with other blogging platforms as well as plain old HTML Web sites.

Ads on WordPress HomepageFolks, since my site has gotten fairly popular I have people who want to advertise on the home page. The problem is that I didn’t know of a good method of embedding Ads that only show up on the home page and don’t appear site wide. (And not in the sidebar.)

I needed to employ a little PHP trickery in order to get this to work and I figured I’d share the methodology in case anyone else wanted to do this, or had a better idea as to how to pull it off.

Live EarthIt’s official, Live Earth was the largest media event in human history with over 2 BILLION people watching across every continent on the planet. In case you are feeling caught up in the global warming debate I’d suggest that the argument is over. The only thing left to do now is help decide on what is going to be done, not if something is going to be done.

This little video sums up the spirit of the event nicely if you ask me… every little thing contributes - so each of us can make a global difference.

If you are interested in seeing how your personal habits impact the environment try the Lifestyle Calculator. I hate to admit it but I seem to have a horrible score. The range is from 105-900 with the average in the US being 325.

Personally I’m at a despicable 608 - I’m guessing it has to do with all of my air travel. I guess I need to pay closer attention to the list of things you can do to fight global warming. (Here is another big list.)

Drunken Robot Sumo Wrestler Video Game

Drunken Sumotori DreamsI happened to catch a little blurb on G-4 TV about a tiny free video game called Sumotori Dreams and decided to check it out. I’m really glad I did because it is highly amusing and I played it for about 30 minutes even though I’m not a big fan of video games.

The concept reminds me of a digital version of Rockem Sockem Robots. Basically you’ve got two blocky little sumo wrestlers and you start the match and just go at it.

The only catch is that these sumo wrestlers are so drunk they can hardly stand up! So, there is as much luck in winning a match as there is skill.

Climate Change CartoonI came across this great little video called “A Beginner’s Guide to Giving a Damn About Climate Change”. I think it was somehow associated with the Live Earth event.

Anyway, the premise of the video is things you can do without actually changing the way you live your life. Despite the use of the word “damn” in the title, this video is actually appropriate for humans of all ages.

The Online Etch-A-Sketch

Online Etch A SketchI previously posted about the famous Etch-A-Sketch artists, but at the time I had no idea that there is a virtual Etch-a-Sketch that anyone can use to practice online! But guess what… there is!

Head on over to the online Etch-a-Sketch and give it a whirl. It works exactly like a real one, which means you’ll be frustrated in no time.

Ahmad Bahr Hate SpeechOur friend Adi, better known as Ruby on Rails Guy sent me this frightening video of hate speech coming from the Acting Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Ahmad Bahr. As an example, here is an excerpt:

America will be annihilated, while Islam will remain. The Muslims “will be victorious, if you are believers.” Oh Muslims, I guarantee you that the power of Allah is greater than America, by whom many are blinded today. Some people are blinded by the power of America. We say to them that with the might of Allah, with the might of His Messenger, and with the power of Allah, we are stronger than America and Israel.

Oh Allah, vanquish the Jews and their supporters. Oh Allah, vanquish the Americans and their supporters. Oh Allah, count their numbers, and kill them all, down to the very last one. Oh Allah, show them a day of darkness. Oh Allah, who sent down His Book, the mover of the clouds, who defeated the enemies of the Prophet – defeat the Jews and the Americans, and bring us victory over them.

Chainsaw Art Carving

Chainsaw Art CarvingDamn! How do I get a bad ass name like Chainsaw Jack?!? That is way better than Captain Jack Sparrow.

Anyway, even though this video is basically a commercial for a Chainsaw Artist - yeah, that’s even cooler than welding - I had to post it anyway.

This video has got it all… two guys chopping on a massive log simultaneously, a pet fox, and chainsaw throwing!
