I wouldn’t actually do this, but for some reason I’m just fascinated with these unbelievably simple methods of circumventing the system.
Just like the How to Pick a Padlock, this method of using a coin operated washing machine for free is so simple it makes you wonder how they would ever collect any money in these machines!

When I stayed back in the college dorm in Denmark it was a well known fact that coins from other countries worked well in the washers…
So for example a 10 Peso coin from Philippines (worth around 1.5 DKK) would be a substitute for a 20 DKK coin, that helped keeping a lot of the students washing budgets down :)
Kim:)
At ASU there was a machine nearby that could be “shook-started” as we called it. Shake it side to side and boom, it starts. I had a washer/dryer in my apartment, but it was hilarious to stop by the laundromat and watch students routinely stand there shaking the hell out of a washing machine :)
But does it really work? I’d love to hear from someone who has tried this :) I saw one once about cheating a Coke machine but it didn’t pan out :/
When I was younger we used to play games at the arcade for free using slugs, but the machines are a bit more sophisticated now then they were back then.
Also, (and I think this still works), if you turn off a pinball machine, and turn it back on, it usually starts with 1 free credit. Though turning it on makes a lot of noise and can attract attention.
Now this is just pure evil. Not the washing machine John, this time you’ve gone to far. Poor washing machine…
Evil indeed! I’ll pretend I didn’t just watch it… lol
We used to do it with a hamer back in the dorm in Montreal. You pay one time, but you don’t let the lock return all the way back after pushing it, you tape it half way. Next time you just hamer it !
et voila !
That was a very interesting find, and yet I’m fairly certain that all of those laundromat owners are a little more irate because of it. I wonder how many washing machines suffered an ill demise while this solution was being sought out.
Oh, I’m sure the laundromat owners either were not aware of this flaw, or have long known about it but price the machines to make up for the loss from some cheaters.
The funny thing is, that old coin style machine is decades old, and this was the first time I’d ever seen it. But just think about how many people must have know this trick, and who knows what other ways to cheat these machines.
Humans are very creative when it comes to getting something for nothing.

thanks guys you save me about 30 a week now in washing which i spend on weed n beer i will give u some cheat codes for automated snack machines u can get free drinks chips whatever.i would put it up but i only want u to have it coz i jealously gaurd this scam coz ***** people if any know it
Ya, this works well. Some machines are harder then others, but I did this for a year or two at school. Then they put in fancy new machines……….
Doesn’t work on any machines made in the last few years. A door/gate closes sideways as you push the tray in. It prevents you from manually sticking anything inside while it’s pushed in.
Thanks – but try again.
brilliant!!
John,
I know things are a little tough for you right now so I’m sending you a roll of quarters for your laundry. I remember why you can’t have a washing machine in your trailer ( remember when the last spin cycle vibrated and shook so bad it knocked your house off of the concrete blocks?) so I may send a bucket and washboard to you as well. I’ll include instructions. On the flip side, I’m sure the family of Opossums living under your house liked the new view….
j-
Yeah, well you know… we’re struggling to make ends meet. But your contributions will go a long way towards helping us get back on our feet! Thanks!

I can’t seem to get this to work. In my apartment there is an older washing machine that costs 2 dollars, so there is 2 slots for 2 loonies. I seem to think this is a freekin rip off so i went to try it, but it didn’t work. Is there a technique of some sort or anything? A certain way to place them? Lemme know what im doing wrong please.
A two-bit loser
Owners and manufacturers of coin-operated equipment have a vested interest in their product. Any system that beats the machines; prompts re-engineering, resulting in a short-term advantage for the thief/cheat.
Ultimately, it’s the thief/cheat who loses both time and energy, spent to save a few dollars—time that could have been spent making money. But by far, the true punishment is in the committing of the crime, not getting caught, if at all.
Cheating and stealing changes who you are–your identity. Kama literally means: action leading to further action. That’s why Kama is instant. Cheat and you’ll keep cheating people out of your life, leading to less opportunities, and inevitably: lowing the quality of your life. Cheating is well summed up by the following quote:
“When a pickpocket meets a saint, all he see’s is pockets.” –Professor Richard Alpert.
That said, if you’re going to steal –steal big or not at all.
Ah Eddy…there is always a critic in every crowd, huh? But I dont understand your logic…’dont cheat [even if its some quarters; quarters youre interested in saving b/c you are obviously f***ing poor] but if you do cheat big’. Those ‘few dollars’ you so blithely dismiss could well be the difference between eating that night or not…or having to choose between clean clothes or a full stomach of having the ‘luxury’ of taking the bus instead of walking [walking during a PA winter is no fun]…all of which were real dilemmas for me when I was a college/grad student. And I wasnt alone by any means. I shared my grinding poverty with many other kids from blue collar homes going to UofPa. Apparently, Eddie you didnt have those problems but you could at least try to expand your mind and realize some werent as fortunate. “[T]ime that couid have been spent making money,” indeed!…this clinically dissociative comment sounds like other worthless platitudes uttered by some economic advisers in the current Administration and the President himself. At the very least, whether condoning it or not, you could tip your hat to that boundless streak of human ingenuity evidenced by this washing machine hack. As for your assertion that cheating and stealing ”inevitably” leads to a ”low[er]ing the quality of your life… .” This is an obvious fallacy. The honest and brutal truth is that crime does pay for most criminals. If it truly didnt pay, then there wouldnt be any crime. ["Behind every great fortune there is a crime." - Honore de Balzac (1799-1850)] Indeed, crime of all sorts is as American as baseball and apple pie because there is money in it. [So much so, that it can honestly be said that the United States is the child of a criminal conspiracy.] And for Americans this is our Prime Directive.
Andy, you wrote:
“The honest and brutal truth is that crime does pay for most criminals. If it truly didn’t pay, then there wouldn’t be any crime.”
Crime continues because perpetrators don’t believe they’ll get caught and it’s human nature to try and gain an advantage. Urinating in your pants to stay warm only appears to be an advantage at first.
A criminal may get away with a crime, but their support base of friends is limited, and thus, so is their ability to keep the money. And my point again, their quality of life is reduced, because they keep looking to commit other crimes, they become criminal all the time–it becomes your identity–who you really are. The truth is, you never really get away with a crime.
No Andy, my post was not criticism, it was enlightenment. You’re just not ready to understand it yet, but you will.
All the new coin chutes and mechanisms have been modified to correct the above shown cheat, as will any new methods to cheat is beaten. An owner knows how much a machine makes on average and they will adjust their machines accordingly.
I found a tenant putting foreign money into a machine, and in return, I raised their rent $100.00 a month. Had they worked harder, they could have made more money, and kept a lower rent.
There are a thousand ways a crime can go wrong, and if you can think of a hundred, you’re a genius, and Andy, you’re no genius.

aw. why has that video been removed?
Thea,
I’m not sure what happened before, but I found it and put it back up now! :-) Thanks for letting me know.
John
great job guys…I’m gonna try that today…NAh, I’m too chicken, but it’s still great!
Thanks, need to go wash my pantyhose now. Anyone want to help?
Hey, So i was so excited to try this because A ) I spent 6 bucks on a was yesterday, 2 dollars to wash, and 2 damn dry cycles !!, so yeah, I have had enough of this. And its the tray with 2 loonie slots, and I tried 20 times positioning the Q tips in different ways, no luck, it doesn’t push all the way through! any tips ? or different methods ? I have heard everything from the inside of bottle caps, to coffee stir sticks, but i don’t want to fuck up the coin insert, and break the machine! lol. I make good money, maybe I should put all this energy on my career instead! … still help me save ppl!
Well, i work on these type of machines. I have to tell you that the coin slide is missing parts in the mechanism (more likely due to a laundromat owner trying to repair the slide him or herself). But I’ll tell you what works :-) add liquid soap to the slide, a lot, with time the mechanism will build up a coat of dry soap and it will work for free. (or use chines coins, look like aluminium and r very light) it’ll work.
If you have a coindrop machine is even eazier, push the return botton and while holding it down flick a penni in the return slot. that will start the machine. I’ll try to make a video and post it.
flick a penny in the return slot, or the coin slot?
nice to stimulate people or teach them how to steal from businesses like mine. Please come to my hostel and try it. I have three cameras installed around my machines and have handed over quite a few cheeky backpackers to the police. Some got quite significant fines hehe. You are warned …
Wow Ed you sound like a paranoid loser. I wonder what cost you more: people getting free laundry or you installing 3 cameras?! Also you raised someone’s rent $100 when clearly they could barely afford laundry in the first place? But hey whatever, karma swings both ways.
Who said that person couldn’t afford laundry? They were just stealing it because they could. If they can’t afford it and don’t want to steal – yes steal, it is THEFT – they can do like millions of people did for years and years quite successfully before the invention of washing machines. Wash it by hand, in a tub, then hang it out on a line to dry.
Not hard, but honest.
there’s one problem on this, just a reminder for all nothing is illegal unless you get caught.
You earn good money but still think it’s your right to steal from this laundry operator? He still has to pay the rent, utilities and maintenance on these machines, plus repairs from the screwups out there who have to poke things in orifices. You’re right, put the time you’ve spent trying to rip him off into earning some money, or wash by hand in a tub for free – you have a choice. I run these things and I don’t think it’s my responsibility to support the lazy thieves of the world.
eddy, nice. you followed up your moralistic argument with a direct contradiction to yourself. Good luck with that karma thing. Judge not….
Hey guess what Edmeister..Have you considered that many people like me have serious medical problems or other which, even through working hard, cannot make it, or like now and many times in my life, not even given the chance to work harder as the daily labor places do not have jobs for everyone..even when I and many take jobs that could kill us due to med conditions! Crime, this country was BUILT on crime and the REAL CRIMINALS are the CORPORATE upper percentile greedy bastards with a mind like you that cannot stand to lose a penny! I however, without cheating know many ways thanks to obscure inventors/discoverers to have energy and fuel for cheap or free, aside from parts. You would have to be a genius to know one,you are not, neither am I,but I’d bet closer…my car (when I could afford insurance, cannot now,had to sell, taking off my modifications) was an 81 LTD that I did all repairs, like anything I own,had a 302 (5.0 Liter) which I averaged 97 MPG with my LEAD FOOT! You can believe that or not,it is a simple conversion to a 20% at best efficient engine, and car companies have not only KEPT them inefficient,we are less efficient NOW than if we used fuel injection on the old straight 6’s.Meaning the lower end of the common car engine is JUNK design, and I can prove better ones existed in the 20s.All I did was reform the fuel into what is detected as ch4,which is a like air gas,not a BIG HEAVY MOLECULE expected to ignite and USE the energy in petrol in 6-8nanoseconds! So if you wanna point fingers, point it at corporations who are obviously working together as if billions are not enough, because I know they do so and have known, easily provable now since the TEXACO CONTROLLED COMBUSTION in the late 40s was announced,we still do not have it.I know how..not the point, not only are the biggest “Good Guys” the real thieves, they in turn are allowing knowingly all this EXTREME excess pollution when the technology, they have and own to stop it,but do not b/c of greed, keeping the poor poor.It is the same with electric companies all the way down the ladder.Destroying the air and think of the murder done by fiery crashes that would not be,since say my car NEVER had more than 5 gallons on board, as that was the capacity of my tank.Same goes for airliners, the fuel is NOT that different at all, regardless of what you are led to believe. They also would not need to carry but 1/10th at most the load of fuel with OLD technology. It is these people who must be running the world via Satan that have to answer as if it were not for them getting rich from greed & murder, the worlds resources would be much more even, thus poverty almost non-existent.But we cannot have that can we? Who would do the crappy jobs? Some people may have a few less billion dollars to pass down, and we cannot have that, no sir.Conspiracy theorist? NO, Factualist..so if you think you want to go there go right ahead, this high school drop-out in order to work and support sick family will school you in chemistry and physics and the “impossible”..but you likely will return as you came, in denial. Anyone else who wants to say I did not get this mileage, fine, but for those who want to know how to do it, sure I will tell you, but you had better have a vehicle old enough to be have a carburetor. That or not be worried about your warranty, which I guarantee is almost worthless as all makers know approx. how long parts will last unless something is VERY wrong and thus, usually will know within the first 5k miles for sure. Also I mention pre-fuel injection because there is a Federal law which prohibits modifying the fuel system..even though racing computers do it, it is not pursued unless you piss someone off by trying to share or sell this info with intention of many having it, this not only decreases profit, but worse, messes up the equation they maintined (car comps.) about 1 hp per Cubic Inch..which tells aprrox. how much fuel is used, and knowing how many cars are on the road, etc.we know how much oil is needed to be produced or imported. The Federal crime of altering a newer fuel system is $10k and 10 years..but I know of others who got more, due to PROVEN frame ups and after that, good police officer speaking the truth in court FOR “Allan” rather than against him,so they nailed him on a weapons charge..etc..12 years..for a shotgun he purchased, not been convicted of a felony, but when he was a teen some of his buddies broke into a liquer store, he did not even get arrested, so he thought nothing of it, the state called it a misdemeanor, but some 30 years later the Feds. called it a felony since “alcohol was involved”. My email for those interested in saving some money and polluting the air less in turn are welcome to debate or ask,but please do not email me just to say it is impossible..etc..any information you get from me is up to you if you use it, if you do something wrong and injure yourself somehow, it is not my fault and will not take responsibility for your actions. I will share what I do know and what I am not sure and do not know of..I am an independant researcher/discoverer of only 5 years thus far, but have a few others of 30+ years supporting and helping when they can. Good luck to all, I did not mean to type this much or go this deep, but that whole issue struck a nerve.Such a topic is not that simple in terms of scope (scale). Best Wishes to all, h2o4go@yahoo.com

“There is always more misery in the lower classes, than there is humanity in the higher”
No. I would never do it.
but what about the ones with just a little coin slot?
My landlord is greedy and installed a coin machine in my apartment where I’ve been living for 6 years paying a very nice price in rent … so ummm .. YES I would cheat it. I’m a single disabled mother of 2 … so yea!
I can’t afford it, to add to a comment someone made, I honestly have had to wash clothes out in my sink and ring them until my hands hurt so bad !
those are some cheap coin op machines. The machines I want to cheat have a shield door that closes behind the coin slots as the coin tray is pushed in, so you can’t put a q-tip in there and get the coin tray to push. If something jams the closing doors the whole tray mechanism jams.
I tried making little saddles out of scotch tap for the coins to sit in within the slots and it seems to work fine till the tray is pushed all the way in, then it locks up and won’t return until the coins have dropped throiugh. It took some beating of the machine to get the coins to drop and return the tray.
Hey Thanks,
It never ceases to amaze me that people will help the dishonest and cheap. Lots of landlords spend years living in basements while they struggle to cover tax & utilities increases, damages, thieves, free-loaders and evil tenants (only takes one to make you question if there are any good people left) and can’t raise rents enough to cover it. Simply owning a building doesn’t mean you’re a “have” whose living off the suffering of others, in fact, landlords put up with more than their fair share of injustice. So thanks buddy for helping the selfish free-load. Shame on you who haven’t got the ethics to pay your own way in life and to those who add burdens on to those who do.
Whoa Sandy! Who you calling dishonest and cheap? My slumlord certainly does not live in a basement, but rather a .5 mil dollar home. Of which he pays for with my rent & others, and he doesn’t put one red cent into maintaining the property I (we) live in. He is sneaky and devious when dealing with the city & attempts by tennants to have him right his wrongs have been futile. (believe me, I wish I could move a.s.a.p) Don’t you even dare get on your holy high horse and call people selfish free-loaders! THE SHAME IS ON YOU MY DEAR, for being the self-proclaimed rightous one who thinks she has earned the right to cast the first stone! Before you condem (what you are labling as) someones ethics, maybe you should walk a mile in their shoes. And yes, “buddy” does deserve a SINCERE thanks, because for most it isn’t about cheating, its about surviving.
Fuck yeah!
It ISN’T about cheating, its about surviving. I dont like to have to chose between food or laundry, and a lot of people do. So I’d rather eat (cause I cant steal food) and jam q-tips in coin slots to have clean clothes.
If you dont like what you see look the other way and mind your own bizz!!!!& Get a Life and quit hate’n on people!!!
is that how you justify your sick actions. carma will have you trying to run a business one day, only to have someone like you cheating and robbing you every chance. or matbe someone skinning your check with misc. fees. someone has to pay for the water / gas / electric / taxes / mtc. etc..
** don’t you know everything you do comes back to ?
I live in a over-under duplex, where my neighbour upstairs has a full sized washer and dryer that comes with his flat. Me? I don’t even have hook ups for a built in washer and dryer, so im stuck using the coin operated machine next door. I have two small kids, my daughters 2 1/2 and my son is 3 months old. You can only imagine the amount of laundry I go through… so all of you people saying its not right and its immoral and blah blah blah, when it comes down to it, I choose to buy food and diapers and pay my power bill rather than dump MORE money into my landlords hands.
My machine has 2 slots, a Loonie slot and a Quarter slot??? I’ve seen them made out of Bra underwire before…
if you pay 1.50 for each unit, every load you would get sick of it, gota live some how.
All of you losers who are crying about paying to do your laundry need to wake up and realize that nothing comes free for your landlord either!! I’m sure they have worked their ass off to get where they are today and at great expense. If you all got off of your asses, you could be successful in life also. So, stop crying and pay your dues in life just like everyone else in this society has to do, no one gets a free ticket to ride! You all act like you’re the only ones that are having a hard time in life. Well, this is wake up call, everyone is having a hard time!! The economy tanked almost 2 years ago, so you’re not alone!! But not everyone in society steals and cheats to get ahead and make ends meet, most people are honest (or at least I’d like to think so).
sandy u gotta just watch what ur saying u talking about get off ur asses well hunny u gotta just mind ur own business, because first of all u DONT know what people have or are going thru and u should not just sit there and point fingers and judge so point that finger back at u and YES SHAME ON YOU! dont sit there and asume stuff i know u should know better and if u dont then i so feel sorry for you.
Well thats a very interesting vid and I’m sure it worked all those years back when people had the old type washing machines! But this days the commercial laundry machines are not quite so simple to cheat :)
Have a look at some of the machines we have on our site (laundry365.co.uk) and you will see that these are old out of date cheating tactics that just will not work with the more modern day washing machines.
Yea sally, try living out of a wheelchair and see how far you make it….i have to type this with my tongue
I own property and why should I not charge for laundry – I have to pay for the water and power that they run on. I also have to pay to get the water pipes and electricity run to the room that is used. I have to pay for the lights in the room and the washer and dryer run about $1300 bucks. So it is stealing and if I catch one of my tennants doing it I will put them out!
I agree with you Chris. You should put them out! You should also report them to the police, file a criminal trespass, and anything else you can. It is indeed theft. And it’s wrong.
John P.
I put the things in there to make it nicer for my tennants — they could have to pack their stuff up and go to the laundry mat. Make very little on the washer and dryer! How much fun would it be to pack up your 2.5 year old and 3 month old and go to the laundry mat for a couple of hours. If I was your landlord I would take them out wait til the lease is up not renew your lease and keep your deposit and beg for you to take me to court
It is good to know one’s principals can be purchased for $1.25 in change…
A lot of self-righteous people on here. It’s called public dissemination of information. Our modern society is built on it. If you don’t think things like this belong on the internet, move to China where they have strict internet regulations.
Would I do this? No, not to my current landlord. Yet, I am still intrigued at learning this vulnerability.
Get off your high-horses.
Well, someone spoke of Communist China; over there, a regular working person wouldn’t be able to scrape and save up to buy a few coin-operated machines and try to make a couple of extra bucks for his family. Being that the coin-op biz isn’t corporatized (yet), most of the coin-op washers and dryers you see are owned by working people struggling to get along, just like you. When you cheat one of these, remember that you’re not sticking it to the man. You’re sticking it to someone who probably struggles just as hard (or harder) than you do, just to get along.
