The kids around here bought washers from the hardware store and played the machines all day, until they changed the mechanism with a piece of wire to hook the washers.

I've been a landlord 12 years. I have worked and sacrificed for everything I have. I live well below the poverty line with 7 people in a 2 bedroom apartment. I make on average around $12.50 hour IF....thats IF I don't have a major repair. My cars are old, I wear used clothes, I have no health insurance, I have no savings. I have held on for dear life through this declining economy. My property made $0 for 5 straight years, I poured every cent back into it I'm still doing it. The outlook has been bleak and I continued to WORK for whats mine. I have lived ethically and honored every contract to every tenant despite being cheated many times over. Many of my tenants dress nicer, have nicer vehicles, have big TV's, Iphone's etc. I've been sued, cheated, ripped off, threatened, etc. Most are generally only interested in spending their money right now. Were you there when your landlord paid his due's? I've worked the last 4 Christmas day's, were you there helping? If you steal a $1 from me its no different than stealing $1 from my 3 year old daughter, no different than stealing a $1 pair of yardsale pants from her, no different than stealing food right off my dinner table. As such I will treat you like a thief. Your problems are YOUR problems. My problems are MY problems(see above). I don't burden you with my problems, you pay me for services rendered. Period. Still don't want to pay? Leave! I don't care if your starving in college. Come ask me and I trade food for work any day, you can sit at my table and share what I have. You don't go to mcdonalds expecting a free lunch. The real cost of this type of theft is not the lost revenue its the damage to machine. I had the vending machines removed here because they received more cost in damage than their GROSS REVENUE, it would have been cheaper to give the drinks/snacks away. I'll be installing washer connections in my units soon. It will cost $1200-1800 per unit and will require 20 hours of my own time for each. I'll be raising the rent $50 per month at lease renewal time. If the tenants choose not stay I bless and release them. Fair is fair, I have to support my family. Being a landlord isn't pacific rim vacations and Mercedes convertibles as some of you would believe. Most people have a choice in life, If you choose an expensive education don't complain to me. There's a 45 year old guy down at the price chopper sacking groceries working on his masters degree. He walks to work rain,sleet, snow or shine. I asked if I could drive him home during a snowstorm and he said "if I did that I couldn't try out my new boots". A friend of mine handed a homeless guy a poptart(new in package) and he hit her in the face with it. A homeless guy was begging for money the other day at the grocery store, he had a smart phone, are you kidding me. It can be hard to maintain compassion for people who act this way.

What's wrong with people nowadays? I doubt God, given that he exists as an all powerful decider of some sort, punishes people for cheating a washing machine. What's next, spending an eternity in hell for stepping on someones grass? I think everyone's looking way to far into this, for it's pretty damn simple. Yes, cheating a washing machine is illegal. If you want to take the risk, then take it. If you owned a business people would try to cheat you, how you handle it is part of being a good owner. If you expect that you shouldn't have to deal with anything in YOUR business, that you shouldn't have to have responsibilities to maintain your property, then you're asking for free money and you are no better than those who try to get a free load of laundry.

Its simple. Grow up and face the facts: cheating happens, and cheaters get caught. It's all fair.

Dear Douchebag,

I didn't make the video. And by the way, what kind of moron writes an email to someone who said:
<blockquote>"I wouldn’t actually do this..."</blockquote>
...and tells him that he and his whole lineage is going to hell?
<ul>
<li>Did you figure out that someone else made that video?</li>
<li>Did you see that I said I wouldn't do it?</li>
<li>Did God tell you to attack everyone you can, you judgmental a-hole?</li>
</ul>
Have a nice day, and good luck on the remainder of your jihad.

First of all, John Pozadzides you just made it valid for the big guy to erase your name from the book of life and all your descendants if they ever make it on life will curse your name. All who hear and see this illegal activities and following his advices wil have the same predicaments as you would and I am so saddened by the fact that a swarm of people will go down to the bottomless pit with you.

One slightly interesting video but more interesting are the attitudes of the people posting about the moral side to this.

In London all decent rental properties have washing machines (in fact, expectations are incredibly high for everything (flashy kitchen etc etc)). But decent means (relatively) expensive to rent. Very simple - there's an addition to the rent to cover purchase cost and maintenance (and electricity and water if not paid for by tenant). This however, stops people in less well paid jobs accessing any accommodation at all.

To me it's a shame there isn't more cheaper and basic (and I don't mean rubbish - just not all bells and whistles) accommodation available. But I guess, reading the comments above, many people think they are entitled to all the modern conveniences without a price tag to match. Ray has given us a really clear idea of the huge cost for landlords of going the coin-operated route. If I were him I'd be gutted at going to all that expense and hassle and then maybe getting tenants that felt they were entitled to rip him off. I hope he doesn't if he feels the current families are hard working and honest and will benefit from it. But who knows who his next tenants will be? Maybe some of the people above.

I'm a landlord working a full time job as well to support my family and we live in a property smaller than the tenants. The washing machine goes wrong - I have to fix it. One was written off by a tenant who left coins in the pockets - a simple mistake by them but it cost me £475. Yeh, there are big corporations out there making billions exploiting people - rip them off instead.

All you whining "students" seem to have a lot of time on your hands to post comments on how to rip off legitimate businesses. And as for the "poor students" seems that you have plenty of money for computers and internet.
Get of your lazy asses and do some real work!!!

FYI: some of us are actually students who are struggling to better ourselves while helping the family out by doing landlord work on a family/family-friend owned property. Hence, it is not fair for tenants to cheat the machine and God help 'em being the strict kind that I am, if I ever suspect that a tenant was doing such, they will be evicted, prosecuted, convicted, and jailed. What?...you think all landlords are millionaires?

Landlords and Apartment Owners, if you lease your machines from one of the bigger washer/dryer companies and feel this is happening to you, give the company a call and they might be able to put surveilance cameras in the laundry room. We have had 127 'tenants' arrested in the last two years for tampering with the machines. It is considered a burglary and not a theft as people keep posting. The tenant will plead down to a misd. and have to pay you restitution.

Who knows, one of you intelligent individuals like 'Dumb Landlord' may have already been arrested.
