There are plenty of national and international news sites, but the cool thing about Topix is that after you tell it your location, every time you visit you only see the news that is local to YOU!
This makes the site a must on everyone’s reading list because you don’t want to just be well informed about what is going on elsewhere, you need to know what’s happening at home.
So, I recommend that everyone check out the site and bookmark it for future reference. A few other things about Topix:
- You can put free local classified ads up.
- You can submit your own local stories, or become a local news editor.
- You can get top stories in a number of categories such as World, US, Entertainment, etc.
Give it a try.

I guess it’s not really an earth-shattering idea, but it’s still nice to see nonetheless! Kind of the opposite of the ideas of the Internet allowing us to reach all across the world in an instant, don’t you think? (Not that it’s bad or anything, I’m just saying that it seems very different than what the Internet has been in the habit of pursuing.)
Yeah, and if you live in a small town, it just pulls up articles from your small-town newspaper.
It was kinda neat, though – the jury’s out for me, I’m still exploring.
Oh, it would be cool to keep tabs on the news back home….
