One of the best bosses (mentors) I have ever had gave me this piece of advice. Train your sales reps to think for themselves and let your sales reps make decisions for themselves. Explain to the sales reps to always make sure they think out an action before they make and make sure they have solid reasons for their actions. Support your sales reps in their decisions by always asking for the reasons they made the decision. If the decision was poor, hold the rep accountable and ask for their reasons for the decision. Use it as a training experience and explain to them why it was not the best decision and what a better decision would be. Give praise to good decisions. If a sales reps makes too many questionable decisions without solid reasons then is the time to review how much decision making authority they should have.

I have found by following this I receive respect, great results and cooperation from my reps and my peers.

These are good points, and yes leaders do need to possess these characteristics, but I would argue that all people need them, so they are not unique to leadership. And those are the traits I was attempting to define. :-)
