Hancock Movie Trailer – Will Smith’s Derelict Superhero

by John P.

Will Smith HancockThe trailer to Will Smith’s latest film, Hancock, just came out and I can’t decide if I am going to really like this movie, or hate it. The movie itself isn’t due out until July 2008, so there is quite a bit of time left to wait.

Will Smith HancockBest I can tell, Hancock is a drunken bum who happens to also have roughly the same powers as Superman. I suppose the story has to do with him cleaning up his life and becoming a real hero, but I’m going to have to wait and see if this is going to be a funny movie or just a piece of crap.

IMDB’s description currently reads:

A hard-living superhero (Smith) who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife (Theron) of the public relations professional (Bateman) who’s trying to repair his image.

Yeah I like Will Smith as an actor, but that movie is not looking like it’s going to be one that I’m going to see in the theaters. I think that he would just annoy me too much.

I really like much of Wil Smiths work, especially when he was with DJ Jazzy Jeff… However he seems to have fallen into a Formula method of characterization in his recent roles.

Are you kidding, you guys? That looks hysterical! I can’t wait! (Maybe it helps I’m a drunk myself! LOL! 16 years sober yesterday, though…) But I love that part about YouTube and Greenpeace – I love how the internet really is becoming so much a part of our lives, that it is even in movies. And of course, given my treehugginess, the Greenpeace joke cracked me up, not to mention the moans of the whale as it went flying through the air! I think I’ll definitely laugh my tuckus off at this one! (Anyone know how to spell ‘tuckus’? Is ‘tuckus’ really a word?)

Hahah after all these superhero movies that seem to take themselves so seriously (with bad jokes sprinkled inside), I’m down for this :)

It reminds me sort of a real-world Incredibles.. and Smith is on fire. It would be hard for him to fail..

Just to add I really think wil is at his best doing comedy, but sometimes his cheeky public persona gets under my skin. And his sci fi movie roles seem to have just a bit too much wil inserted. I Robot was one of the best flicks he did, but not for his lead role, the computer graphics were the best part. The Fourth of July set the pattern that i was refering to.

I’ve noticed something about trailers lately: They sometimes portray a completely different image than the actual feel of the movie. The trailer is tailored to attract a large group of people to top the box office on opening night (whether they pull it off or not is another question, my point is that a trailer doesn’t necessarily say anything about the movie anymore).

That being said, I like Will Smith.
Prepare for the worst but hope for the best. Eh?

That’s definitely a good point! I’ve noticed something about trailers lately, too, although a bit different. So many of them lately don’t tell you anything about what the movie is about. I just noticed this recently after seeing a film and then remembering the trailer and thinking to myself how clueless I was before actually seeing it! I guess they pull us in with magic and lights and pretty colors. Ok, that was off-topic from your comment, but, uh…yeah…

LOL!

No, it’s not off topic! It’s actually what I said, that they don’t necessarily say anything about the movie! You put it quite nicely: pulling us in with pretty colors and lights ;)

That’s true! :) It’s very similar to what is going on in American politics right now, with the coming of our elections. People offering little ‘snippets’ of what they are about, perfectly framed in ‘colorful’ packages – in an effort to appeal to the most amount of people! ;)

As 90% of the new movies are here in Asia (in more or less good quality) available before the official release I might spend 80 PHP (less than 2$) and will ahve a look. If I don’t like it I bring it back, pay another 10PHP and get another movie… gotta love that system

cheers
