My main OS is XP Pro, has been for years. I've recently (well about 2 years ago) got into linux mainly for programming and used VMWare with Ubuntu.

I've now migrated to dual boot XP Pro and Ubuntu but I do see the advantages of Virtual Machines.

Windows is less crash-prone running in Parallels!

Without knowing, a guess is it's because Windows no longer has to cater to a variety of hardware from different vendors but only the VM layer, built from the start to accommodate it.

I messed around with a primitive version of this tech. a few years ago. But these systems are mind boggling.

Currently I'm using Microsoft Virtual PC, but I really want to try out VMware.

It would be really nice if each of these applications could open VMs created by the others.

This could never happen with an OS like Windows or OS X, their companies would just go crazy.

I've "VM'D" Kubuntu X64 (64bit Ubuntu variant) and it is a flawless VM. Amazing thing is, on VMware, it operates nearly at full machine speed. Very hard to tell the machine has been virtualized.

I've been using VMware for about 5 years now. I don't know how I lived without it. To me, this technology is like TIVO, once you use it, it's impossible to stop.

Nice roundup. I've only used VirtualBox on my Mac (once they came out of beta), and I've created virtual machines for both Ubuntu and Windows Vista. Both of them work well enough, and the software, as you said, is quite easy to use.
