I would like to throw Joel Osteen into a pit of vipers...in a loving manner, of course. There's just something creepy and insincere about a man who smiles that much.

I do not agree with this line of thinking at all. The Word of God does emphasize that all things are possible to him who believes and we do serve a God who delights in the prosperity of His servant and the Word clearly states that God desires that above all else we prosper and be in health even as our souls are prospering. While it may not exactly translate into prosperity gospel, poverty gospel as mentioned here and taught elsewhere is also wrong. While it MAY be wrong to chase riches, it definitely is wrong to even think let alone believe that God wants you to be poor...

I love organized religion. It ensures that I have a leg up on 95% of the population.

Hi John, I always go back to the memory of "God helps those who help themselves", but far too many people are willing to fall for "men of God" asking for money donations with the promise of wealth and prosperity as their "heavenly reward". Yeah, right. I've got some ocean-front property in Arizona......

Ug, this topic just makes me sad. I believe that God is willing to help any who help others, but with in our means. I can never, ever imagine a time where God will swoop in and remove our financial responsibilities. It just doesn't make sense. Getting a house payment that you cannot afford sounds more like a curse than a blessing. God has blesses us all with a brain (or so I hope) so we can make smart decisions and live a wonderful life, even if our house is a little smaller, or our car isn't super nice. Isn't the whole point of this life, in a christian's view, to learn to turn away from "worldly" things and not care about "riches"?

I dunno, but if someone told me today that if I donated to a church, and God would let me buy a house I could never possibly afford, I would think that should be criminal.
