The majority of people are not interested in attending the generic political speech where items from the past are repeated so that the person running can maintain their position. The fact that this many showed up by choice not only helps to create a large network of similarly-minded people, but also serves to trickle-down energized communication to those that didn't go to the event. The actual numbers of people that were quite directly affected by this rally are much higher than the 100000 that attended. I'm not from the US but I've spend some time there this year and he's been on the TV a lot. Even in the UK he's on the TV all the time. I don't think we even know who else was running until about 2 months ago. He's just sooo well known over here too. That is a very impressive number.
