The Magic of Photoshop, Photography and SUPERMODELS!

Photoshop-for-PhotographersI’ve been an avid amateur photographer for many years, but I’ve never been a big fan of Photoshop. It is a big, expensive, slow program with a steep learning curve. But I’ve gotten to the point where my photos just don’t have much room for improvement without digital manipulation. So, I finally broke down and decided to study Photoshop.

It began with signing up for a college course called “Photoshop for Photographers”, though my travel has kept me out of class for a couple of weeks. So I’ve been studying my book, The Adobe Photoshop CS4 Book for Digital Photographers, and practicing with my new Adobe CS4 Suite.

Well, I’ve been posting some Photoshopped images recently of my travels, however I thought I would demonstrate the power of the tool by sharing a couple of photos that I took of people, to illustrate the difference it can make…

Photos From San Francisco: Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39

Seems like every time I go to San Francisco I spend time at Fisherman’s Wharf. Yeah, I know it’s touristy and all that, and I get around to the non-tourist places a lot too, but this place keeps me coming back. Something about all the vibrant colors, constant activity, and variety makes it truly magnetic.

Crabs-at-Fishermans-Wharf

So, I assembled a little collection of shots from up and down the Fisherman’s Wharf area, including some from Pier 39. This is one of the top places to see when visiting San Francisco, so here is a little sampling of what you’re in for when you do.

A Visit to the Boudin Bakery in San Francisco

Boudin Bakery Bear BreadToday I went down to the Boudin Bakery on Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco to get some fresh baked sourdough and some of their delicious clam chowder.

When I arrived, there was a group of people huddled around the window where they are usually making the bread. Only this time, a nice young lady was actually talking to the crowd through her wireless microphone system, and taking questions as well.

I was carrying my camera, so I flipped on the video mode and captured the following video. In it, you’ll see how she makes a special bread loaf in the shape of a teddy bear. Very cute, and extremely tasty! Enjoy.

Desktop Wallpaper: A Ray of Hope

On Sunday morning I woke up early for a long drive to Houston, TX. The sky was overcast and hinting of the 24 hours of rain that was to come. As I was driving and about to get on the highway, miraculously in the middle of the sky an opening appeared in the clouds and the bright morning sun poured through like a light waterfall.

I pulled over on the side of the road and snapped this photo. I was fortunate because I had my Canon 5D Mark II in the seat beside me with the 70-200mm lens attached. After I took about 5 shots I hopped in the car and continued. Within 30 seconds the opening was gone.

I’m making two versions available. First a color version:

Scotch Tape Makes Frosted Glass Transparent!?!

Tape-Making-Translucent-Glass-ClearOk. Someone has got to try this and report back if it works! I’m not sure if this is a video trick, or if it really works, and I don’t have any frosted glass to try it on. But according to this guy, if you put some of that clear box tape on frosted glass, you can see right through it.

I really can’t believe this works, but the darn video is so convincing! So again, I’m putting a call out for anyone and everyone who has the ability to give this a try and report back if it works!

British Couple Commits Suicide Together After 54 Years of Marriage

Edward-and-Joan-DownesJust a few weeks ago my beloved dog Sandy came to the end of a long and debilitating struggle with kidney failure. My wife and I did everything we could to prolong her life and make her happy and comfortable, but none of us can cheat death, and eventually it was upon us.

One of the most difficult decisions of my life came when I was forced to choose to euthanize my faithful companion of more than a decade. It was compounded by a feeling of guilt – not that I had acted too soon, but that perhaps I had waited too long out of grief and a sense of personal loss. I remember wishing for days that she could tell me if it was worth living, or if she merely wished she could die.

When we finally had our vet come to the house and put her to rest it was a traumatic experience for the family, yet the death was so quite, fast and peaceful that not only did it remove any feeling of lingering doubt that we had done the right thing, but it made me consider my own mortality and caused me to realize that ultimately I would rather be able to go like this, than be imprisoned in a body stricken with ailments, waiting for death to take me.

Well, this is the situation that Sir Edward Downes, and his wife of 54 years, Lady Joan, found themselves in. And luckily for them, they were able to make the decision to leave this world on their own terms. I only wish that we had the freedom to choose for our selves here in the USA.

WordCamp San Francisco 2009: Chris Pirillo – Community WebVisions

Chris Pirillo lectures at WordCamp San FranciscoDave Curley, Michael Pick and I recorded and edited the videos from WordCamp San Francisco 2009, and here’s the lecture that Chris Pirillo gave on building and maintaining Web Communities.

By the way, everyone be sure to contact Chris and tell him to use Woopra! We had a nice long discussion about it, but he doesn’t see the benefit of “real time” Web Analytics. So, someone other than me is going to have to explain to him how it makes a difference in your life!
