Health Challenge Exercise Goals for 2010

Ok folks, tomorrow is the first day of the Health Challenge! And I don’t know about you, but I’ve given myself some pretty aggressive exercise goals for this year’s challenge. So, over the next two months, here is what I would like to achieve:

  • 2,500 Pushups – That is 50 pushups a day for 50 out of the 60 available days. Should help my arms, chest, back, and cardio.
  • 1,000 Bicep Curls – Obviously, this is just for one thing! Cause the ladies love a good gun show! :-) I typically curl 30 pounds (per arm) X 30 reps, 3-4 days a week. If I achieve this, I will have curled 15 Tons per arm during the two months.
  • 1,000 Squat Thrusts – This is an all around exercise which is especially great for the abs.
  • 10 Miles on the Treadmill – Ok, this might not seem that agressive to you guys, but I sustained injuries in the Marine Corps and running is a little painful. But still, I want the cardio.
  • 250 Pullups – I mounted a pullup bar in my house, and I intend to work these in for more upper body strength throughout the program.

That’s it! Now, in case you worry that this is a fairly limited routine, let me remind you that in the Marine Corps just about the only exercises we did were pushups, pullups, situps, squats and running. And in 13 weeks of boot camp people’s bodies changed. So I guarantee you that if you will set some goals on the exact same exercises as I’m doing here, you will see weight loss as well as strength and endurance gains. (Of course you still have to stick to our rules!)

So, how about it? Do a little math and then let me know what you are committing to for the next 8 weeks!

Review: Griffin PowerJolt Reserve iPhone Charger and Battery

I’m not sure what other people think about the Griffin 9785-PJLTRSV PowerJolt Reserve for iPhone & iPod, but I for one love it. This is a little cigarette lighter adapter for your car which allows you to plug in your standard iPhone USB charging cord to power-up your phone while on the road. But it also happens to have a built in rechargeable battery attached to it which you can either use in the car for wireless convenience – or take in your pocket for backup power when you go!

A few things you should know:

  • It’s about $40. I got mine at a local WalMart.
  • The battery connects to the charger magnetically. Yeah, it’s cool. You just grab it and pull it off. When you are done just get it near where it needs to be and the magnets pull it together.
  • You can be charging one phone with the USB while another is charging off the battery.
  • It charges an iPhone MUCH faster than other chargers in my opinion.
  • The battery will bring an iPhone 3Gs up to about 50% charge.

Here are a few closeup photos from mine. I go nowhere without it.

Stop Scraping Snow and Ice and Use A Windshield Cover

Today it’s snowing in Dallas. Rare, but it happens. Even more often we get terrible ice storms. And there is nothing worse than trying to scrape ice off the windows of a car for like half an hour when its freezing outside. So guess what… You don’t have to do that!

If you have a vehicle that you can’t park in a garage, like my big ass Nissan Titan pickup truck, you can get a Windshield Cover and just put it over your window before the storm comes. Then, no matter how much ice comes down, when you are ready to go you just pull the cover off the window and there goes the mess with no scraping!

If you’d rather not spring for a $10 cover (or these $6 disposable ones – Frosty Fender Disposable Windshield Cover) you can just take a large garbage bag and split it down the sides – leaving it attached on the bottom – then when you spread it out lengthwise it should be wide enough to cover the whole window. Same thing with a little painters dropcloth from Lowes or Home Depot. Just find some plastic sheeting and cover the window and you’ll be all set.

Tutorial: Password Protect an Entire WordPress Blog

Recently I had the need to set up a couple of blogs that I only wanted people who are logged in to be able to access. After a little research and experimentation I came across the following fix.

So lets say you wanted to set up a Blog for just the use of your own internal company. Or Family. Or whatever… But you don’t want anyone to be able to access the site unless they are logged in. It’s actually a lot easier than you think. Here’s how to do it.

Diet Coke Makes You FAT – So, Don’t Drink It!

Yeah, I said it. But there is a lot of data to support this fact, and we’re going to run it down for you. Because everyone I know who considers themselves overweight also drinks diet drinks – as if they think this helps. Well, it doesn’t. It hurts! So stop drinking that crap! Here’s why…

According to an article on WebMD:

People who drink diet soft drinks don’t lose weight. In fact, they gain weight, a new study shows.

The findings come from eight years of data collected by Sharon P. Fowler, MPH, and colleagues at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. Fowler reported the data at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association in San Diego.

“What didn’t surprise us was that total soft drink use was linked to overweight and obesity,” Fowler tells WebMD. “What was surprising was when we looked at people only drinking diet soft drinks, their risk of obesity was even higher.”

In fact, when the researchers took a closer look at their data, they found that nearly all the obesity risk from soft drinks came from diet sodas.

“There was a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for every can or bottle of diet soft drink a person consumes each day,” Fowler says.

David Bowie and Bing Crosby Sing “Little Drummer Boy”

I just wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season (if you aren’t Christian). The spirit of the season is shared by all, and I hope this little performance by David Bowie and Bing Crosby brings a little smile to your face.

Halleluja! New Rules for the Airline Industry: 3 Hours Max on the Tarmac!

I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced the hell of being trapped on an airplane against your will, but I have on numerous occasions. Years ago I was trapped in a plane in Boston for 6 hours. We were even at the gate, but they literally would not let us off the plane although it was after midnight and we would rather just stay the night there.

I’ve also been trapped for over two hours for a flight that was only scheduled for 40 minutes. And I can’t think of how many times there have been 1-2 hour delays where the airplanes sit on a hot Texas runway with little or no air conditioning going. With ALL passengers complaining – just to save a little fuel.

Well, the US Transportation Department says they can no longer hold passengers hostage on delayed planes for hours on end. Starting in April, there will be a three-hour limit for planes stuck on tarmacs. And I for one think this is an idea whose time has long since come. (Here is the official government document in PDF.)

The John P. Health Challenge 2010 Official Rules!

Ok folks, you’ve got less than 2 weeks of gluttony left before the Health Challenge starts again. We’re going to be getting in shape together after this holiday situation as a New Year’s Resolution, Ok? So who is with me on this?

And by the way, there are going to be a number of changes to the program this year based on our experience from last time. So, here come the rules – they are quite simple and few.

The Rules

  1. Eliminate as much sugar from your diet as possible. No more candy, cake or cookies. You are allowed Two otherwise illegal candy bars per week IF you follow all of the other rules.
  2. No sugary drinks like Coke (here’s why) or alcoholic drinks (huge calories)! In fact, nothing but water, unsweetened tea or coffee to drink! You are allowed Two otherwise illegal drinks per week IF you follow all of the other rules.
  3. Decrease food portions by 30-50% for all meals. Instead of eating whatever portion you are given, slow down while eating and stop after you feel full.
  4. Snack all you want, but only fruit, veggies or nuts are allowed!
  5. Exercise at least 5 times a week. This doesn’t mean long exercise daily! It means frequent bursts of exercise. Pushups and situps a few times a day for example.
  6. Publicly update the rest of us and encourage others to keep going! (Twitter, Facebook, etc.)

The Health Challenge ends on Feb. 28, 2010.
