Dear Friends,

I came to this review looking for 500D tips. Really nice review we have here, thanks Mr. John, and I kinda envy you for the playboy mansion and all interesting stuff you have been into haha.

I never had a good camera before, for many reasons being money the strongest of them. So last year I bought a Panasonic GF1 in Singapore. My friends started to talk in facebook how good my pictures looked like, and this cheering helped me to study more and look further to photography stuff.

This year I decided - even loving my m4/3 so much - I should have more options when talking about lens and available gear in a fair price. m4/3 equipment is too expensive in comparison to what I would get if using another standards. So, I exchanged my beloved GF1 into a 500D, with the kit lens and the wonderful 50mm 1.8 prime lens.

2 months so far with my Canon, and I bought now the 18-200mm. I just LOVE it, my camera is everything I was looking for and now I know how much I enjoy photography, thanks to Canon.

I see many comments like "I am new, I can't use pro gear" and etc. You know, I am quite new to photography also, and my google reader is full of RSS where amazing pictures pops up everyday, making me feel like crap haha, I have too much to learn before take such beauty pictures... but I always can take a good picture in the creative auto, and also I am learning about aperture, flash compensation, white balance and my pics are getting better and better. From 50 pictures I take, 3 of them looks really nice IMHO.

You can go to 500D (or 550D or 600D) if you can afford it. You will be always plenty of used Canon equipment to buy and try, and improve your skills day-to-day. You can use the Creative or Full Auto modes, you can shot really nice videos, I have a USD $10 tripod which is just awesome for my needs, I can travel and take it together always.

And, the most important, you can improve your skills cause 500D is a great camera, full of settings I am discovering everyday. Internet is also plenty of howtos, tips and tricks which will help you to learn how to better use your camera features.

I am just a normal guy, I work with computers and not with photography. But I love to shoot pictures! It is like painting, and you have been there, in that very moment. Share those experiences with friends and relatives is the best part of it.

You can check some pictures I shoot (first half with GF1 and the last with 500D) in my facebook album Trips at http://goo.gl/Nfejk

Thanks for the review and for the space to share my opinion. And go for Canon, you will never disappoint yourself.

Cheers guys!

Vicki,

If you are not completely sold on getting a DSLR yet, then don't do it! I'd recommend you go with the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0041RSPRS?ie=UTF8&tag=onmasbl-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0041RSPRS" rel="nofollow">Canon G12</a><img src="http://www.assoc-amazon.com/e/ir?t=onmasbl-20&l=as2&o=1&a=B0041RSPRS" width="1" height="1" border="0" alt="" style="border:none !important; margin:0px !important;" /> - the just released update to the G11.

Don't worry about the zoom. It's plenty long enough, and the larger and higher quality image sensor will allow you to zoom and crop in the computer much better than the other alternatives.

Cheers,

I, too, am deciding on either a nice p&s, like the Canon PowerShot G11 or stepping up to the DSLR, like the Canon Rebel T1i, but since I'm just getting back into photography, I'm undecided on which way to go. You didn't reply to Rene's posting and this was area where I needed some answers, too. G11, SX130IS or SX 30IS? I'm leaning toward the G11 (even though the zoom is small), but everyone raves about the Rebel series. Still, I'm concerned about having to buy lenses, etc. and ease of operation. Your thoughts, please?

Thanks,

Hi!
I am keen in purchasing a Canon camera and when I vist the website, I'm confused because there are so many models. I need a basic camera with good features such as sharp resolution, great color accuracy, image stablization and noise level. But because i am very new to the world of photography, i am not sure if i am able to handle a DSLR as it seems really complicated to me and as I'll need to use the camera on a weekly basis for my job, i cant afford to buy something that is too complicated to use. I'm now wondering if a Powershot is a good enough substitue for a DSLR? I am considering EOS 1000D(Rebel XS) V.S a Powershot. I am located in Singapore hence not all models are available to me. For Powershot, which would you recommend between G11 , S90, SX120 IS, SX20 IS (seriously i cant tell the difference between these 4 models and i am so tempted to just get the cheapest out of the lot ) Any advise or break down of information based on what you know would be deeply appreciated as I am really a "newbie".

p.s any difference between a IXUS & Powershot? or are they a normal point & shoot camera with different marketing strategies?

I have the Canon T1i, and it is a GREAT camera for both amateurs and pro photographers. The ability to record HD video with pro lenses is probably my favorite feature!

Fourth dSLR I've owned and as far as consumer-based models are concerned, this is far and away the best. Tremendous results with color, crispness and contrast. LCD much improved from prior models. Hate the tiny flash (that's why I have a Speedlite) but so be it. Face detection is good and other features are terrific. Seems like Canon (slightly) improved their menuing system as well.

John,
THANK YOU for your quality explanation. It's like an abridged 'Digital Photography Basics for Dummies'! It's very helpful to get inside tips from a professional. And it's rare to get such tips from someone who can actually translate the information into a format that non-professionals can digest.

Thanks again for all your hard work, it's appreciated!

The D3000 is a good camera for sure, though it's definitely no T1i. Still either will make nice images. However, the tutorials I'm going to put out will only be for Canon gear because that's what I'm familiar with.
