Who is Reading OneMansBlog.com Anyway? CrowdScience Will Tell Ya!

I guess it was about a month ago when I signed up for CrowdScience.com‘s service to see what they could tell me about the visitors to my little old blog here. And some of you may have been prompted during the last few weeks with a little popup asking you to take a survey. For those of you who participated – Thanks!

Anyway, I thought it would be fun and interesting to share some of the results of the profiles of readers here on the blog. A few statistics that I find particularly interesting are:

  • 18% of OMB readers are still in School, but over 2/3rds have attended at least some college. 40% of you actually have degrees!
  • More than half of you report that you are earning over $50,000 per year. Wow! That’s a wealthy bunch of readers!
  • 50% of you guys are over 35 years old. Obviously, the other 50% is younger. ;-)
  • About half of you are married, and 20% still live with your parents.
  • 42% of you use the Internet at LEAST 24 hours per week! Wow, that’s like a part time to full time job!

My New Custom HDR Wall Art From Trey Ratcliff of StuckInCustoms.com

A few weeks ago I got a brand new piece of art from Trey Ratcliff, who specializes in hdr photography. And I’m not talking about a little 8″x10″ photo or anything… I’m talking about a 5 foot diagonal full color photograph specially printed on a high gloss aluminum surface.

The photo is one Trey took in Central Park which I immediately loved and asked him to get printed for me. Here is a little video of the un-crating of this magnificent piece of wall art.

If you have some room in your home or office for museum quality photography I highly encourage you to contact Trey and just make it happen. He’s one of the most accommodating artists you could ever want to meet, so just give him an idea what you’re looking to do and he’ll take good care of you. Here is his page that lists current hdr prints, but keep in mind that as long as you have the budget I’m sure he’ll make any piece available for you.

Stop Skype From Auto Adjusting Microphone Volume on Mac (Disable Auto Gain Control – ACG)

When we are recording Wealth Nation, we often conduct interviews via Skype. Of course, we’ve got a fairly sophisticated microphone setup going on, and I get everything tweaked just the way I want it before getting on the call. But then, in the middle of recording a show Skype decides to start changing microphone volume levels on me!

I’m not just talking about changing the volume level in Skype! I mean Skype reaches out and changes the main volume level on the laptop through the System control panel! It’s amazing. You can sit there and watch your microphone settings going up and down while your sound quality is all screwed up.

Well, I finally found a fix. It’s actually pretty simple.

Prison Joke

A new convict arrives in prison, and he’s sitting in his cell with his new cell mate. Suddenly someone yells “243″ and the whole cellblock starts laughing. A little while later someone yells, “23″ and again everyone starts laughing. This happens every day between 2pm and 3pm.

The new guy has no idea what is going on, so he asks his cell mate, “what’s so funny”? The cell mate goes on to explain, “There is only one book in the prison, and it’s a joke book. We’ve all read it so many times that we’ve memorized the jokes. So now, we only have to hear the numbers.”

So, the new guy goes to the library and studies the book. After a couple of weeks he’s ready… Two o’clock rolls around and someone yells, “119″. The whole cellblock erupts in laughter. The new guy yells “198″. There is dead silence.

He asks his cell mate what happened? The cell mate replies, “Some people can tell a joke, and some people can’t.”

YES!!! I’m Going to the Indy 500!

Well, the good folks over at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway invited me once again to attend the Indy 500 (I couldn’t make it last year), and were kind enough to give me full press credentials so that I can take all the photos I want and bring you guys the inside story behind the world’s largest single-day spectator sporting event.

I plan on driving from Dallas to Indianapolis so that I can carry all my gear. Of course, I’ll have all my photo and video stuff, but I’ll also take a cooler, portable chairs, and other goodies to enjoy while parking in the infield during the big race.

My goal is to bring back a ton of photos and behind the scenes stories to let you guys all know what it’s really like to be at the Indy 500. Considering I’ll have full access to the pits, the track and just about everything else, I’m going to spend 4 days there to try and really get a good feel for it.

The Indy schedule looks pretty good for Thursday through Sunday (race day) so hopefully I’ll get a little time with some drivers, crews, and to practice some high speed photography and get my settings right for the big day.

I Could Use Some Help!

First of all, have any of you been to the Indy 500, or for that matter any of the other NASCARIRL (Indy Racing League) races? If so, I could use all the advice you can give! I’ve never been to one of these events, which is crazy considering what a car guy I am.

A Brief History of Pretty Much Everything Flipbook Animation

This is a very cool little video animation that someone created. I can’t imagine how long it took to draw every page of this flipbook, but if you ask me without YouTube it wouldn’t have been worth it! Actually I can imagine what it took because the author said…

It’s something like 2100 pages long, and about 50 jotter books. I’d say I worked on and off it for roughly 3 weeks.

Anyway, here is “A Brief History of Pretty Much Everything”. Not quite as detailed as Mel Brooks’ History of the World Part I, but it’ll do. ;-)
