Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse!

Today is Mickey Mouse’s birthday, or perhaps I should say the anniversary of the day Mickey was introduced to the world as Disney’s first synchronized sound cartoon, Steamboat Willie, which premiered at the Colony Theater in New York City in 1928. This is the day that Walt Disney recognizes as Mickey’s official anniversary at least.

Mickey actually first appeared six months prior in unofficial screenings of Plane Crazy on May 15th and The Gallopin’ Gaucho on August 2nd. After Steamboat Willie, soundtracks were added to Gaucho and Crazy, and they were released on December 30, 1928 and March 17, 1929, respectively.

Yes, I Sued Neal Campbell for Libel and Defamation

Neal in Long BeachIts a sad day, but one that was destined to come – not because of what I’ve done, but because Neal Campbell has been defaming me for nearly a year and there are no signs that he’s ever going to let up. What makes the story more sad is that Neal is someone I used to consider a friend.

What happened? Neal’s wife, Cali Lewis, decided to leave him. And when she did, my wife and I eventually took her side. And as far as Neal is concerned, that is reason to “rebuke you in the name of Jesus”. Yep. He did that to at least three or four people I know of as soon as they questioned what he was telling them about the whole mess.

Dual-Meaning Typography – Art, Designs and Illusions

I don't want your (stu)pi(di)ty.

(Image by Peter Sebastian, the master of dual-meaning typography)

What is Dual-meaning Typography?

When you give some serious thought to design, whether on the web or hard copy, the ultimate goal is communication. And without the art of typography, communication would be extremely difficult, if not altogether impossible.

Ah, you are thinking: Well, DUH; of course; how obvious! Most of the world reads and writes; type and fonts are obvious communicators. And you would be absolutely correct because most of the ways we use typography are obvious. Areas such as print, newsletters, posters, etc. are all around us and have been for centuries.

Street Art: Joshua Allen Harris’ Inflatable Bag Monsters

Subway Sea MonsterJoshua Allen Harris did some amazing street art in New York back in 2008, and I’ve been wondering where he has been since then. I can’t find him on Twitter, Facebook, or even a Web page for him. So if anyone out there knows where to find the real Joshua Allen Harris please leave a comment below!

In the meantime, take a gander at his unique and beautiful designs. He creates mythical creatures out of bags and then uses the hot air rising from steam grates in New York City to inflate them. Simply amazing!

I Spent The Day With The Blue Angels, and Here Are the Photos

Cali Lewis, Dave Curlee and I had the good fortune to spend a day with the US Navy Blue Angels at the Alliance Air Show last weekend (thanks to our friend Rachel Medley). Among the highlights was the invitation to actually ride along with the Blue Angels – but not in their standard F/A-18… instead in their C-130 Hercules cargo plane (crewed by an all-Marine Corp staff)!

US Navy Blue Angels C-130 Hercules, Fat Albert

Now, when you first hear this you might be like – that’s awesome! Of course I’d do it! At least that is what I thought. But then I learned that they were going to fly that C-130 the same way they fly those fighter jets! Seriously. Like crazy takeoffs and landings and 60 degree banks, etc. They described it as “worse than a roller coaster”, even though the plane, affectionately named “Fat Albert” weighs 100,000 pounds!

US Army Golden Knight’s SFC Will Fleming Literally Goes Skydiving!

On Sunday I had the opportunity to ride along with my friends over at the US Army Golden Knights while they did an exhibition jump at the Alliance Air Show in Ft. Worth, Texas.

I was sitting right in the doorway of the plane so I could get access to shoot the team with my big ass camera as they jumped, and although I’ll be posting a lot more photos this was by far the coolest picture I snapped.
