Internet Access: A (Modern) Basic Human Right

That title may be upsetting to some but it gets my basic point across. We live in a world, not just the “first world” where our lives and destinies rely on our ability to communicate with each other. If you distill this concept, it’s really always been that way. Our ability to directly communicate via language, our concepts, thoughts, and emotions to one another was and is a defining factor in why we are the dominant species on the planet. It binds us, separates us and enables us to enact great feats. In short, communication IS our way of life.

Currently, the most widespread form of communication between people is the Internet. This covers a very broad spectrum of methods from actually speaking to each other via services like Skype and Google Voice to the use of social networks such as Twitter, Facebook, or Google Plus. In order to take part, to really have a voice that can be heard amongst the din in our worldwide conversations, one must have access to the Internet. I would argue that one must have unfettered access. That is, service that’s not throttled, shaped, blocked or filtered. To block a user from access to specific data is to limit their ability to speak and understand. This violates a basic human right free and open speech.

TUTORIAL: How To Run TV Power Cables Through Your Wall

In Wall Power Cable Wiring

In Wall Power Cable Wiring

Up at the office we had a TV that we wanted to mount on the wall in the reception area. Only problem is, the power plug is down at the bottom of the wall and we really didn’t want cables hanging down the wall looking all messy. So the solution was to route the cable through the wall.

While I was doing it I figured some other people might experience this need, so I made a little video to show you how simple the solution is. All you need is this kit: Datacomm 50-3332-WH-KIT Flat Panel TV Cable Organizer Kit (White)

The Massive Gallery of Funny License Plate Pictures (Over 230 of ‘Em!)

Do you love seeing funny license plates on cars as you’re driving down the road as much as I do? Well, after seeing a funny one while coming home from the office the other day, I got to surfing and collecting a few license plates pictures… and I might have gotten a little carried away!

What we end up with is probably the single biggest collection of license plates on a page anywhere on the Internet! Hopefully it won’t:

  1. Crash the webserver trying to serve up a billion things to every single visitor
  2. Choke your web browser, trying to download all the thumbnails on the page!

As usual, you can click through on any of the thumbnails to see the full size version of the image.

Hey, by the way, if you enjoy the post do me a favor and share it on Twitter, Google+ and Facebook. I sure would appreciate it!

Hidden Symbolism in Logos: 10 Awesome Examples

Logos are a marketing tool that are based completely around brand recognition. While you can do a lot based on a name, seeing an image will stick more permanently in someone’s mind. Even if they are not aware of it, when people look at a familiar brand there is an immediate spark of recognition that will draw them toward that particular product.

This is because they remember it, just as they would remember a slogan or a commercial. If you have your brand in those people’s minds they will be much more likely to buy it. That is why making your logo more targeted through hidden symbolism is a great tactic. It draws the eye, makes the person spend more time looking at it and committing it to memory, and gives them a sense of satisfaction when they see how the image relates to the brand name or purpose itself.

It might seem cheesy, but presenting it like a puzzle will attract consumers more than patronizing them with a straightforward and simple design. Just look at these popular and well-known logos that have used this tactic with great success. [Read more...]

WordPress PLUGIN: Enable REL= and Other HTML in Author’s Field (for Google+ and Google Search Listings)

Avatar in Google Search Results

Google is beginning to roll out the ability to have your Google Profile linked to search results. This is an awesome new feature that my friend Trey Ratcliff worked with them on setting up. Do a search for “HDR Tutorial” and you can see what I’m talking about.

In attempting to get this working with my various sites I quickly discovered that WordPress is stripping all of the REL= language from any Author field. In other words, you go into your USERS area and try and enter rel=”author” along with a link in one of the Author Bio areas, but WordPress leaves the link and removes the “REL=” part.

Now, it does this to try and protect you from users entering malicious code in their bio area. But if you have a blog where you implicitly trust all of your authors you might want to enable the ability for them to put in a link to their Google+ profile. For this reason I’m releasing a very simple plugin that will “fix the glitch”.
