With all the coverage about the war between Trump and the NFL over his supposed outrage about players taking a knee during the national anthem, I hardly even need to mention it – still for context I will. (Though Trump’s motivations are also suspect since he may have ulterior motives for attacking the NFL.)
Very important that NFL players STAND tomorrow, and always, for the playing of our National Anthem. Respect our Flag and our Country!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 30, 2017
What I find hypocritical is that Trump equates respect for the National Anthem and respect for the Flag, while he himself denigrates the American Flag and specifically violates the official United States Code of customs as they relate to the flag.
For reference see:
Title 36 – PATRIOTIC SOCIETIES AND OBSERVANCES
CHAPTER 10 – PATRIOTIC CUSTOMS
Sec. 176 – Respect for flag
(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.
(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.
On Trump’s own website they are violating these customs by selling merchandise decorated with the American Flag and clearly used as both a receptacle and as advertising for Trump and Pence.
I don’t really care what side of the argument American’s come down on with regards to people expressing their right to protest during the anthem, I’m upset that the symbol of a nation which “represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing” is being used to peddle merchandise for profit.
