Live EarthIt’s official, Live Earth was the largest media event in human history with over 2 BILLION people watching across every continent on the planet. In case you are feeling caught up in the global warming debate I’d suggest that the argument is over. The only thing left to do now is help decide on what is going to be done, not if something is going to be done.

This little video sums up the spirit of the event nicely if you ask me… every little thing contributes - so each of us can make a global difference.

If you are interested in seeing how your personal habits impact the environment try the Lifestyle Calculator. I hate to admit it but I seem to have a horrible score. The range is from 105-900 with the average in the US being 325.

Personally I’m at a despicable 608 - I’m guessing it has to do with all of my air travel. I guess I need to pay closer attention to the list of things you can do to fight global warming. (Here is another big list.)

Climate Change CartoonI came across this great little video called “A Beginner’s Guide to Giving a Damn About Climate Change”. I think it was somehow associated with the Live Earth event.

Anyway, the premise of the video is things you can do without actually changing the way you live your life. Despite the use of the word “damn” in the title, this video is actually appropriate for humans of all ages.

Global Warming ArgumentI think by now everyone knows what side of the environmental debate I’m on. And I’m aware that I have friends and relatives that still have differing opinions on the matter. When we discuss it I normally argue that the consequences of being wrong about global warming are potentially far, far worse than the cost of taking some unnecessary action.

Well, along comes this video that some guy made (I don’t even know who, so if anyone finds out please let me know) which demonstrates the best rational argument I’ve seen to date. I honestly defy you to watch this and then come up with a VALID response.

In case you happen to care about Global Warming as an issue in the next Presidential election (in like 20 years…) there is a complete chart of every candidates positions over at The League of Conservation Voters. There is also a PDF version you can download.

Saltwater CombustionI was so amazed at what I’m about to share here that I struggled for some time to come up with the right title. Other titles I considered:

  • Florida Man Saves the World
  • Man Cures Cancer and Solves Energy Crisis With One Invention
  • Accidental Discovery Eliminates Need for Oil
  • Saltwater Combustion - The Incredible Energy Solution

In the end, no title seems worthy of this discovery. And I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it changed the world.

PollutionThere is a great list of practical things that each of us can do to actually slow down or reverse the damage being done to our little planet over at GlobalWarming-Facts.info.

I’ve shortend the list a bit here, but you can always use the link above to get the original.

Dead TreeWow! Thanks to Debbie for passing this little gem along. I’m simply speechless. And to think we almost bought a Prius to be “green friendly”.

Now I’m glad we opted for a totally pimped out 06′ Honda Civic. That way we actually do have one of the most “green friendly” vehicles to offset my arguably-worse-than-a-Hummer 05′ Nissan Titan!

Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage - By Chris Demorro

The Toyota Prius has become the flagship car for those in our society so environmentally conscious that they are willing to spend a premium to show the world how much they care. Unfortunately for them, their ultimate ‘green car’ is the source of some of the worst pollution in North America; it takes more combined energy per Prius to produce than a Hummer.
Before we delve into the seedy underworld of hybrids, you must first understand how a hybrid works. For this, we will use the most popular hybrid on the market, the Toyota Prius.

Al Gore to Testify Before Congress

If you’re interested in contributing to the effort to fight Global Warming, now is the time to actually do something.

On March 21st Al Gore will be testifying before congress about the topic and he has almost 300,000 digital signatures he’s taking with him. You can add your name to the list in about 30 seconds and help give the message all that much more impact.

And while you’re at it, please spread this message to at least a few other people so that everyone can participate. After all, it’s everyone’s Earth.

TEDSix months ago I blogged about Gapminder - a non-profit site funded by Google that shows some of the most interesting statistical analysis on the planet. Well, I just discovered that Hans Rosling, founder of Gapminder, gave an awesome demonstration of its use at the TED conference last year.

This discovery was followed by the discovery that all of the speakers from the most recent TED conference were video taped and each of their speeches is now available to be seen by everyone.

Global Warming May Have Wiped Out Dinosaurs

Gerta KellerFrom the American Society for Microbiology… You know how we’ve been hearing for years that a huge impact probably wiped out the dinosaurs? Well, now it seems there is evidence to suggest that those silly scientists were off by a few hundred thousand years!

Gerta Keller of Princeton University claims that it was more likely a period of Global Warming that did the giant beasts in.

Lake PeigneurIn 1980 Texaco was doing exploratory drilling for oil in Lake Peigneur, a shallow man-made lake near New Iberia, LA. Although many of the facts from that day are lost, what we do know is that someone miscalculated and drilled right through the lake and into a salt mine below.

It’s generally accepted that the drill punctured the roof of the third level of the mine. This created an opening in the bottom of the lake, similar to removing the drain plug from a bathtub. The lake then drained into the hole, expanding the size of that hole as the soil and salt were washed into the mine by the rushing water, filling the enormous caverns left by the removal of salt over the years.

Al Gore Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

Al GoreFolks, I keep saying it… You need to see An Inconvenient Truth. As more proof, Al Gore was just nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. So, come on, what’s it going to take? :-)

The fight for the global climate is a fight for peace, say members of parliament Børge Brende and Heidi Sørensen, and they have nominated former US Vice-president Al Gore for a share of the Nobel Peace Prize.
