Well, I’ve seen some pretty bad ass driving in my life, and I don’t think I’m all that bad myself – but here’s a guy who can take like a 10 ton piece of heavy equipment and rock it onto two wheels and drive back and forth!

I don’t know what they pay this guy to operate that thing while he’s working, but clearly he’s worth every penny!

The eROCKIT Electric Bike Goes 50 MPH!

There are quite a few things I want when it comes to motorized contraptions, but very few I want more than a fully electric motorcycle. And here is a contraption that’s right up that alley. A pedal powered electric bike from Germany called the eROCKIT allows a rider to go 50 MPH!

I think the general design of the bike is very interesting, although the pedal power part is kind of novel and I’m not sure at all useful. There is just one problem though it’s going to cost you… wait for it… $40,000.

Here is what GizMag had to say about the characteristics of the bike:

The whole thing weighs just 110 kilograms and with over 45lb/ft of torque and 13bhp, it can top 50mph.

The torque characteristics of an electric motor are very different to a roadgoing motorcycle powerplant – the aforementioned 45lb/ft of torque is available from standstill, and the linear nature of the power delivery makes it very easy to control… this would put it in commuter 250 roadbike territory for acceleration, and the 50 mph top speed is suitable for just about anywhere other than an autobahn or freeway.

Around town, it will be a rocketship and light and manoeuvrable enough to make breeze of weaving through stopped traffic – a better town motorcycle than currently exists.

You can download a PDF Brochure here for more information. Keep in mind that the bike has a range of about 35-50 miles before it needs it’s batteries charged. That’s right. It has onboard batteries.

Crazy Motorcycle Riding in India

I saw this video weeks ago, but never posted it. However, every single time I ride my motorcycle on the highway I think of this. I can’t help it! It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen on a motorcycle!

This guy is laying down on his motorcycle riding through traffic in India, where no one respects lanes, and texting on his cell phone! Unbelievable!!! I wish I was actually this good.

A Collection of Homemade Electric Project Motorcycles

People who are really wanting to go all electric in terms of their personal transportation haven’t had a lot of options. Sure, you could get a Vectrix electric scooter, or if you had a boatload of cash you could buy the Wrightspeed X1 Supercar.

But of course, there is one other option. You could always build your own electric motorcycle! That’s exactly what these people have done! And you can even find the specs and parts on some of the associated web sites. Of course, even if you don’t build one, its totally cool to take a look at what these other folks are doing. Pretty soon I’m hoping we can pick up full electrics from Honda, Yamaha, and other manufacturers.

First of all, a Ninja 750 motorcycle gets new life as an electric bike:

Next up, the Electric Motion project bike, eMoto. You can find the specifications, parts list, and even steps to build your own.

Here is a Yamaha R1 with 28 lithium batteries. It’ll go about 75 miles with a top speed of 100 MPH.

The Porsche Panamera is So Ugly… Someone Should Be Fired!

This wretched hog of a vehicle looks like an AMC pacer had it’s way with a 911, and the god-forbidden spawn grew up into the Porsche Panamera. Seriously, I wouldn’t care if this thing had 1,000 horsepower, and hovered. I will ridicule anyone who buys it. Mercilessly.

Go ahead! Just take a look at what the geniuses over there have put out to compete with Mercedes, Jaguar, Maserati, Lexus and the like. I just watched this video, and nearly threw up. Way to go boys! It’s not bad enough that the aged 911 gets its ass handed to it by a Nissan, now you’re going to make fools of yourselves in the family sedan market. Brilliant.

I Executed My AMG

Well folks, yesterday I committed a cardinal sin. I wrecked my new AMG that I just told you about not long ago.

Those of you who follow me on Twitter got the news about an hour and a half after the wreck… just after the tow truck took my car back to the dealership from whence it came. And a very special thanks to all of you who called or responded back to my Tweet. I very much appreciate your concern for my safety (Lisa, Giovanni, Ted, Mike, Hallie, Paul H., Mike B., Paul M., I hope I didn’t miss anyone?).

This update is for the rest of you guys like my parents who read this every day and are going to call me after this and ask me why they had to learn about my accident through my blog! Well, the answer is… it’s just easier to tell everyone all at once, and no one was hurt – just my baby. So it wasn’t an emergency or anything. You’d have gotten a call if so.

Everyone wanted to know what happened, and the short story (as I understand it) is that we were on the highway and someone cut in front of a truck a couple of cars up from me. That truck slammed on the brakes and came to an immediate screeching halt. The lady in a BMW in front of me slammed on her brakes. I then slammed on mine.

This wasn’t a normal situation where people are already braking and then just brake harder. It was, highway speed to 100% brakes. In traffic. The entire event took about 2 seconds I guess.

So, here are the photos of my car. It was by far the worst damage of the three vehicles involved. The Mercedes Benz repair shop was unable to figure the odds on whether it was totaled or not. Which is not a good sign. Usually they can just say, “oh yea, we can fix that”. So we’ll see what the insurance says. Even if they are able to repair it, the guy told me it would take “at least 60 days”.

Anyway, I guess it’s back to driving the NSX for now. Glad I hadn’t sold it yet!

I gotta admit, that old TV show CHiPS from the 1970s helped me fall in love with motorcycles. There was something really cool about the fact that they were chasing people down on two wheels. But really, we never saw Ponch or John do anything amazing on their motorcycles. It might have left one wondering how useful of a tool one of those big bikes actually is.

Well, this post should give you all the reason you’ll ever need NOT to run from a motorcycle cop. To say that these guys are well trained is an extreme understatement. Here now is a collection of police motorcycle competitions that demonstrate what it’s really like to be “one with the machine”.

First of all, thanks to Perry Quinn over at Lijit for turning me onto Ken Block!

Ken Block is a driver for Subaru, and apparently whenever they need someone to do something completely insane, they give him a ring. He has gained worldwide notoriety for his exploits outside of rally competition, having successfully jumped his rally car 171 feet for Discovery Channel’s popular “Stunt Junkies” show in 2006.

Then in 2007, for a segment in DC Shoes best selling Mtn. Lab DVD series, Block slid and jumped his rally car in the snow with pro-snowboarders at New Zealand’s SnowPark. The session resulted in an epic Snowboarder Magazine cover shot featuring Block jumping his rally car alongside a pro-snowboarder, plus an amazing video sequence that was included in the closing of the DVD.

In the following video, we get to watch Ken “practice” in his 530 horsepower Subaru WRX as he drives like a maniac. I only wish it was me!

Here is Ken jumping that WRX 171 feet in November 2006 for Discovery Channel’s show “Stunt Junkies”.

And finally, Ken Block and the DC snowboard team combine a rally car with snowboarding at New Zealand’s Snow Park NZ resort in September 2007 for DC’s snowboard video Mtn.Lab 1.5. John P. Gets a Mercedes AMG CLK55 Convertible… and Loves It!

My long time readers are already aware that I have a veritable stable of vehicles, including my NSX and my Q45. In fact, right now in my driveway there are 1,780 horsepower worth of vehicles just sitting there begging me to take them out and blister some pavement. So last week when I drove up to work at Layered Tech in my new AMG Mercedes it wasn’t really a surprise to my co-workers. But what was a surprise was the fact that I said I made a deal to sell my NSX and my Q45 when I bought it!

I know, it sounds strange that I would actually agree to give up two of my babies for a single new one! On one hand, I have my two-seater, mid-engine, hand-made, exotic-car NSX – the pride of Japan and the only supercar worthy of direct comparison to a Ferrari or Lamborghini to come out of the orient. And on the other hand, I have my top of the line, big-daddy Infinity Q45 with it’s reclining rear seats, laser guided cruise control, and 360 horsepower all-aluminum V8. But you see, the new AMG takes some of the best characteristics from both of these vehicles and combines them into one single car that I think I can live with every day. And that’s a hard thing to find.

Let me brake down a few of the finer points of my two vehicles that I’ve promised to give up – both of which I love. And by that I mean, I have a real emotional attachment to both of them! First, the NSX:

The looks! The NSX is simply stunning. It is a head turner. When I take it anywhere, people want to stop me and talk about it. People honk and wave at me. Guys drool over it, and the ladies think it’s hot. I’ll put it up against a Ferrari any day. It suits me very well.
The performance! My NSX was hand made in 1993. It was number 327 that year. And even after 15 years, there are still very few cars that can match it’s performance. It is one of the fastest accelerating, braking, or cornering cars on the road. And I love to go fast. Trust me.
The exclusivity! When I take my NSX out of the garage, I can rest assured that I will be in the only NSX people see driving by them all day, week, month, or possibly year. Valet’s park my NSX right in front of the building, and they are scared to actually drive it. Enough said.

Next, the Q45:

The power! Any time that you can pack 5 people in a car and still go zero to 60 in 6 seconds, it’s a great car. The Q is one of the few big family cars that can keep up with small powerful sports cars.
The gadgets! This car would make James Bond jealous. Remote controlled trunk lid? Check. Heated, reclining rear seats? Check. Voice controlled climate, audio, navigation systems? Check.
The luxury! This big, powerful car also purrs like a pussycat when I’ve got passengers along for a ride. It’s fantastic both in town, or on the highway, and it’s so quiet and comfortable that it actually routinely puts people to sleep.

The only problem with these two cars is… they are not one single car. I mean, I wish I could get the performance and sheer sex appeal of the NSX into the techno-luxury of the Q. But it isn’t going to happen. Not today. Not ever. So, I did the next best thing and bought a new baby that can at least get me a little closer to nirvana.

Introducing the Mercedes AMG CLK55 Convertible!

This is the part of the article where I could gush on and on about what a cool car I just bought… but instead, I’m going to let other people tell the story. For starters, here’s what Cary Russ from The Auto Channel had to say:

AMG takes the basic Mercedes-Benz and substitutes its own engine, transmission, suspension, and brakes, and makes changes to both interior and exterior styling. Where other CLK models have a 215-hp 3.2-liter V6 (CLK320) or 302-hp 5.0-liter V8 (CLK500), the CLK55 AMG has a specially-tuned 5.5-liter, 362-hp V8. The transmission and suspension are specially modified, and there are subtle (and not so subtle) changes to the bodywork and interior.

But all CLK models share the basic platform, and that’s good news. The second-generation CLK chassis, introduced in coupe form in 2003 and as a cabriolet in 2004, is significantly more rigid than the first generation chassis. I recently spent a week with a CLK55 AMG cabrio. Even with 362 horses and 376 lb-ft of torque, and an exquisitely sport-tuned suspension, the CLK55 AMG cabrio was bank-vault solid, even on bumpy roads.

My time with the CLK55 cabrio was not exactly classic convertible weather – the top stayed up except for one 20-minute window between showers. No matter – any convertible is good when it’s sunny and the top is down, but bad weather is the best time to tell just how well-made a drop-top car is. In any form, the newest CLK cabrio offers first-class comfort and style. In CLK55 trim, add near-supercar performance.

With regards to performance, he said this:

There is a technique in race engine building called “blueprinting”, in which each moving part is matched for weight and dimension. Connecting rods are as close to each other in weight as possible; ditto for pistons and valves. This is pretty much what AMG does to each engine in an AMG Mercedes, and each is hand-assembled by one technician. The result is an engine as smooth and refined as possible, and one that can reliably make more power. And there is no power shortage in the CLK55, with 362 horsepower at 5750 rpm and a very healthy 376 lb-ft of torque peaking at 4000.

That torque gets to the rear wheels by way of an AMG-modified five-speed automatic with adaptive shift logic and “Speedshift” manual mode controlled by buttons on the steering wheel. It shifts significantly more quickly and authoritatively than the standard Mercedes transmission upon which it is based. With all that torque, shifting is an option, not a necessity, but it does add to driving enjoyment. The massive brakes allow the CLK55 to stop as easily as it goes.

When the 2004 model CLK55 won Car and Driver’s high end sports car shootout, here is what they had to say:

This is a giddy, fast four-seater as stern as it is forceful. Toe into it, and you get authoritative acceleration right now, no waiting for the revs to build, no fiddling while the turbos spool up. The sound barks and the seatback shoves your back.

At 3740 pounds, it’s lightest of the three, although the spread to heaviest is only 120 pounds. So this hustler doesn’t make its speed through the method of low mass. Instead, it gets to 60 in 4.5 seconds in the old-fashioned way—via a big engine, 332 cubic inches, 64 more than the BMW.

The mood is serious, sober, confident, professional, and unsmiling. The CLK’s unique exterior shape tries to say sporty, and maybe it does in an open-necked Ralph Lauren sort of way. But the look is not about taking chances, and the car itself is not about zingy, runabout fun. And it’s not about fashion, either. The interior is black, trimmed precisely in thin lines of bright chrome and frosty sweeps of white metal. The molded materials have textures that say quality, and the dial numbers express the facts with a cool lack of emotion. Everything is correct. That’ll be $80,695, please.

You have the feeling of durable goods. For a certain class of buyer, that’s exactly right. For the sporting crowd, well, the performance results are blue-chip. Acceleration tops the others, and the brakes outstopped them, too. Grip measured 0.87 on the skidpad, very solid for a four-seater, but no match for the stellar BMW. The CLK is poised in the twisties, quite capable, too, but it doesn’t play—it simply takes orders and is careful to avoid encouragement.

And now, let’s just wrap things up with this report on the cousin to my new car, the AMG CLK55 Black. A stripped down version with a bigger engine. Keep in mind that basically everything Jeremy Clarkson says here applies to my car, only in exchange for a little extra performance, I get to put the top down!

Ok. I know it’s wrong. And you can all slap my hand later. But good lord! I was watching these videos of women who, for some unknown reason, decided to take a ride in the passenger seat while professional drivers took hot laps around race tracks.

Listen up folks! If you aren’t the type of person to actually get in a car and drive it around a race track, don’t even bother to get in the car with those of us who would! I can guarantee that you are NOT going to enjoy yourself!

This first guy is doing hot laps at The WRX Experience Gold Coast Australia. Part of me felt sorry for this lady, but the evil part of me just laughed and laughed.

Ok. I have to admit I actually felt a little bad for this next lady – who looks like she’s going to literally die! (I still laughed my ass off.)

Now, how does this next lady expect the guy to concentrate when she’s acting like that? Plus, wait for the bonus at the end – she actually wet herself!

Ok. So before all you ladies start giving me flack, here is an example of one chick who can seriously drive!!! Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that she’s completely hot either.

If there are any smokin’ hot and extremely brave ladies out there, perhaps one day I’ll take you for a crazy ride in my NSX. It has been known to make grown men squeal like a little piggy! (You know who you are!!!)

If James Bond Can Drive the Aston Martin DBS, So Could I!

If you’ve managed to see the recent James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, you got to watch Bond absolutely destroy an Aston Martin DBS. Yeah, that is what that awesome looking car at the beginning of the movie was!

Well, the DBS is really just a souped up DB9, which happens to be one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

Jeremy Clarkson over at Top Gear took the DBS out on the track and ran it through it’s paces. The car confounded him for a while, but ultimately he got a read on it and there was a bit of a surprise ending…

Chris Harris from Autocar.co.uk also took the DBS out for a spin and here he gives us the complete run down including quite a few more technical specs and measurements.

To round out the comparisons, Fifth Gear took the DBS out and bagged it around a track, including having the stunt driver from Casino Royale show us a thing or two.

But how does it actually perform? Well here is a video of the 2008 Aston Martin DBS compared to the 2009 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. The DBS is better looking, out handles the Ferrari through a lane change, corners at only .01 G’s less than the Ferrari – oh and it costs $120,000 less ($266,350 vs. $385,419)!

So, if the DBS is the sportier version of the DB9, how do they differ, and how does the DB9 itself perform? Well, 5th Gear is her to help us out with a fantastic review.

Did you ever seen those maniacs who ride wheelies down the road in traffic despite the fact that they are placing themselves and everyone else around them at risk? Whenever I see them I:

Can’t take my eyes off them; wonder if they are going to crash the whole time I’m ignoring the road and staring at them; want to punch them in the face for being such idiots.
Wish I could do that.

So, if you’ve decided to be a complete bonehead and are going to learn how to wheelie your ride, at least watch this video produced by SuperBike Magazine.

The Ridley Automatic Motorcycle (with a CVT)

I think most of you know that I’m a huge motorcycle fan by now. And there may be a few folks out there who would really like to ride a motorcycle, but who are afraid of the learning curve. Well, the Ridley would be a great option because it’s got a completely automatic transmission that using one of those CVTs that I wrote about a little while back.

Basically, riding a Ridley would be like riding a super-sized scooter since all you have to do is twist the throttle to go, and squeeze the brakes to stop. There is no need to worry about clutching with one hand, braking with the other, while twisting one throttle and shifting with the other foot. Leaves a lot more time to pay attention to balance and just enjoying the ride.

Top Gear Drives the 640 HP Lamborghini Murcielago

Ok. The most awesome thing about this video is half way into it when they have a drag race between the Murcielago and a VW Golf GT. Now, the VW is quite quick. I’d say that it’s faster than the vast majority of cars on the road. But the Lambo absolutely and unequivocally destroys it.

Now, I’ll grant that the Murcielago is faster and more expensive than the Lamboghini Gallardo. But if you watch the other video and this one back to back you can see why I’d take the Gallardo every day!

10 of the Coolest Machines You Could Ever Hope to Ride

I was entertaining myself for hours this evening while perusing all of the crazy ways man has invented to move himself from point A to point B. After we mastered the most efficient methodology, apparently we turned our attention and energy towards also creating the most inefficient methods possible.

Why would we do this? Well, beyond the very basic primal need for horsepower… I’m guessing there was either a bet or a dare behind most of these creations. Either that, or they built em to attract the chicks!

Let’s kick this off with an 1,100 pound machine by Jake Lyall called the RIOT (Re-Invention Of The) wheel. Lyall’s monowheel is unusual because it does not use the rider’s weight to provide the reaction to the engine’s thrust on the wheel. Instead the rider is outside, and the reaction is given by a lead-weighted Honda 80cc 4-stroke scooter engine suspended from a central shaft, driving through a sprocket attached to the wheel spokes.
A separate 450-pound counterweight keeps the rider hovering above the ground at the front. Steering is done partly by precessing a 65-pound gyroscope to give yaw, and partly by the rider shifting his weight.

Next is the WL-16IV, for Waseda-Leg No.16 Refined IV, a walking chair developed in a Japanese university.

The McLean Monowheel is possibly the most famously impractical machines anyone ever created. I mean really, what is the point? (Other than the fact that it’s totally cool, and I want to ride it!)

Mojo Motorsports builds the 30 MPH Revolution. It’s available now for $1,000 including shipping… if you’re brave enough to ride it.

This “thing” is like a giant motorized baby buggy. If anyone has any info about it, please share. It would be awesome to see the plans…

The Frankenscooter was built with the purpose of being “…AS RATTY, UGLY AND FUNNY LOOKING AS POSSIBLE”. I think they succeeded.

The Timberjack Walking Machine is used in to fell lumber. As I understand it, it’s from a defunct division of John Deere. Wonder if I can pick one of these up on eBay?

The Hubo FX-1 was made by the Humanoid Robot Research Center of South Korea. The development concept is that the robot can walk naturally with carrying a person or a load of 100kg, so the lower body takes after legs of human and the upper body takes after a chair.

In case you ever felt your legs were getting too much exercise riding a bike the normal way, you can pick one of these up and pedal backwards.

The Mondo Spider was made by a group of Canadian artists: Jon Tippett, Charlie Brinson, and Alex Mossman. They all live in Vancouver, BC. You crazy Canadians! Eh?

How a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) Works

I have explained what a CVT or continuously variable transmission is to at least a half a dozen people. So, usually when that happens I take the time to write up a tutorial and share it with you guys.

Now, the CVT discussion came up as a result of a broader car discussion in which I was explaining that a Nissan Murano SUV has a CVT transmission – which I really like. But it’s not the only one. There are quite a few vehicles with a CVT such as:

Mitsubishi Lancer
Honda Civic Hybrid
Nissan Altima
Audi A4
Dodge Caliber

In addition to automobiles, CVTs can be found in scooters, and even some new bicycles. In fact, the CVT began as a small vehicle transmission and later had to be beefed up substantially to handle large vehicles like the Nissan Murano.

The following is a video of the Variator in a Yamaha T-Max scooter with the case removed. Notice how as the engine revvs up, the centrifugal force changes the ratio of the gearing by simply using the belt.

In this next video Leon Li from FlyScooters.com gives a demonstration of how the CVT works on a scooter.

One thing that is very cool is that CVTs are becoming available for bicycles too now. So imagine getting rid of that old fashioned “10 speed” in favor of a bike that does all the shifting for you automatically.

Here is a video of some guys who are running a CVT on a racing go-cart. Not only can you see how the transmission performs, but you get a look at the actual tranny in action.

The 1,000 Gallon Jeep Waterfall Art Machine

Now this is a fantastic piece of marketing. And it works, just look at this blog post! Jeep is getting some free advertising…

The technology behind this waterfall is very similar to how an ink jet printer works. Essentially, thousands of nozzles are configured individually to allow pictures to be drawn with falling water. The results are simply awesome.

The Greatest Lost Race Car Wheel Ever

This is one of the most fantastic things ever. During a race, I’m guessing it’s down under by the announcer’s voices, one of the cars loses his entire wheel. He manages to pull over safely on the side of the track, but the wheel keep going.

I can’t believe I never wrote about the T-Rex before! I talk about it all the time with people, but I guess I just never bothered to share it here. Well, we’re fixing that right now!

In this video, Tiff from Fifth Gear takes the T-Rex out for a little spin on a cold, windy, rainy day in the UK. Despite the dismal weather, and the fact that he is completely exposed to it, just watch how much fun he’s having at 100 MPH while skidding around the wet track.
