The Coolest Airplane Shadow I’ve Ever Seen

Airplane Shadow

Airplane Shadow

A couple months ago I took an early morning flight from Dallas to Las Vegas, and everything lined up just right on this landing.

I was sitting at the window and I noticed that our shadow was nicely tracking us and converging with the general direction we were going. (As expected obviously…) You will rarely see this because everything has to be at just the right angle. The position of the sun, the direction of the runway, the approach to the runway, and even your vantage point within the plane all have to be correct.

Anyway, I pulled out my Samsung Galaxy Tab and started videoing, and I think what I caught here is actually pretty cool. Hope you enjoy.

Halleluja! New Rules for the Airline Industry: 3 Hours Max on the Tarmac!

I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced the hell of being trapped on an airplane against your will, but I have on numerous occasions. Years ago I was trapped in a plane in Boston for 6 hours. We were even at the gate, but they literally would not let us off the plane although it was after midnight and we would rather just stay the night there.

I’ve also been trapped for over two hours for a flight that was only scheduled for 40 minutes. And I can’t think of how many times there have been 1-2 hour delays where the airplanes sit on a hot Texas runway with little or no air conditioning going. With ALL passengers complaining – just to save a little fuel.

Well, the US Transportation Department says they can no longer hold passengers hostage on delayed planes for hours on end. Starting in April, there will be a three-hour limit for planes stuck on tarmacs. And I for one think this is an idea whose time has long since come. (Here is the official government document in PDF.)

Should Fat People Be Allowed to Fly?

Kieran Daly wrote an article called Passenger creates big debate at American – I mean big! a couple of weeks ago. The story originated as a result of the following photograph taken by a flight attendant aboard her flight while the plane was boarding.

Fat Guy on Airplane

Now anyone who has to do a lot of traveling can empathize with the guy in the middle seat here who is stuck by this morbidly obese person. God knows I’ve had experiences where a huge person has spilled over onto me, and frankly I don’t want another person touching me for even a second, much less hours on a long crowded flight.

SouthWest Airline’s Rapping Flight Attendant – David Holmes

Rapping Flight AttendantIn light of the fact that shortly I’ll be boarding a plane to San Francisco to serve as the official videographer for WordCamp once again this weekend, I thought I’d share this fantastic airline video of the Rapping SouthWest flight attendant!

Unfortunatly, I’ll be riding courtesy of American Airlines, and there will be NO fun on our airplanes mister! Anyway, I’ll fantasizing about this guy when my stewardess is giving the whole boring lecture… Word.

Time Lapse Photography – Flight From Amsterdam to San Francisco

time-lapse-flightThis one doesn’t really require much more introduction than the author’s (Ettubrute) description:

On my night time flight back to SF from Amsterdam, I noticed that the lights from cities were making the clouds glow. Really spectacular and ethereal – it was really seeing the impact of urban environments from a different perspective. Each glow or squiggle represents one town or city!

Luckily the flight was half empty, so I was able to set up an improvised stabilizer mound made up of my bags, pillows, and blankets for my camera to sit on.

We were around the midwest at the beginning of the clip, and there were fewer cities once we hit the rockies. the bridge at the end is the san mateo bridge.

Technique: 1600iso; beginning – 1 (30sec) exposure / 45secs; end – 1 (4sec) exposure / 10 secs; total elapsed time: around 3 hours?

Equipment used: Nikon D300 (interval shooting mode), Tokina 12-24mm.

Music: Bloc Party – Signs

Video: 24 Hours of Global Air Traffic

global-air-traffic-videoThis video is awesome! Some guys from the Zurich School of Applied Sciences built a simulation to display every commercial flight in the world over a 24-hour period. According to Wired:

While the map may look complex, Dr. Karl Rege tells us he and his team found it surprisingly simple to assemble using data readily available on the internet. “We used a commercial website called FlightStats to gather global flight and schedule information,” he says. “So there was no need to contact the different airlines.”

The team mined FlightStats for the departure and arrival times of every commercial flight in the world, then plugged it all into a computer to assemble their simulation. For the sake of simplicity, they assumed every plane traveled at the same speed and every flight took the most direct route to its destination. Then every flight was assigned a position on a Miller cylindrical projection, which is similar to a Mercator Projection but doesn’t distort the poles so much.

Keep an eye out for the day and night lines in the video. It’s interesting to see how traffic patterns change by time of day.

First Class to Hawaii on American Airlines

John P Rides First ClassI began my two week vacation to the Hawaiian Islands on Monday. During the trip I’ll be visiting Lanai, Maui and The Big Island with reviews, photos and even a few videos to follow. So, if you’re stuck at work for the next two weeks but would like to take a virtual vaction, feel free to live vicariously through my travels.

Priority Pass Travel LoungeI arrived at DFW airport a bit early, so since there was time to kill I did it in the travel lounge. Terminal D has every airline lounge imaginable, so being a member of the Priority Pass program I stopped by the club for some refreshments and relaxation.

AA AirplanesThe lounge in terminal D is quite nice with lots of free snacks, drinks, and good work space. There were only a couple of other people in the club at the time so it was very quite. It also had some great views of the runway and airplanes, and I snapped this shot from the club.

Air Travel is Getting More and More Pathetic

I’ve been talking about how crappy airline service has become lately, and I just read this article from the Wharton School which I thought I’d share:

Wharton professor Serguei Netessine’s trip from Philadelphia to Dallas in May was an all-too-typical day in the sky.

After circling Dallas for an hour because of stormy weather, his flight was diverted to San Antonio where he spent several hours on the runway waiting for the storms in Dallas to clear and eating a bag of peanuts for lunch. He arrived in Dallas five hours late and missed most of his scheduled meetings, rescheduled his appointments for later in the day and succeeded in booking — actually overbooking, as it turned out — what he thought would be an evening flight back to Philadelphia. He had no choice but to fly home the next day after paying $400 for the only room available at the airport Park Hyatt.

Travel Tip: Faster Gold or Platinum Status With American Airlines

AAdvantageEveryone is aware of American Airlines and most other carriers elite status levels. These are the people who are invited to board the planes first, get free upgrades, and even get the best seats in the first few rows of the economy seating section (you might not have known that).

Normally in order to achieve elite status you would need to fly at least 25,000 qualifying miles in order to achieve the lowest level of Gold, or 50,000 to earn Platinum. However it is actually possible to get your upgrades with only 5,000 or 10,000 miles respectively.
