A Random Collection of My Favorite Comedians

Stephen LynchHi. My name is John, and I’m a comedy-oholic. They say that the first step to recovery is admitting you’ve got a problem. Well, I am completely addicted to Comedy Central Presents, a series of 30 minute specials of just about every comedian you can imagine. And I’ve seen them ALL!

Just to be clear, I don’t just watch Comedy Central at home. I also have XM satellite radio in my car and I listen to the comedy channel when I’m driving around! Now, you’d think all this exposure to comedy would mean some of it would rub off on me. WRONG! Nothing funny about me. But I have developed a keen sense of picking out the best and brightest, and here is a small collection of some of my favorites.

The Genius that is Steve Martin

Steve MartinFolks, everyone knows Steve Martin, and most of us love him (screw you buddy, if you don’t!). But I bet you had no idea how wide ranging his talents are. Luckily, I’m going to show you right now!

Martin’s comedy career began when he started writing material for other people. Initially he landed a job writing for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and ended up winning an Emmy Award in 1969. After writing for John Denver, Glen Campbell and Sonny and Cher, he later earned another Emmy nomination for VanDyke and Company.

Martin has also written two novellas, Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company. When asked in an interview about his novella, Steve said:

I wrote a novel this year called ‘Shop Girl,’ and several producers came to me and wanted to turn it into a movie. And I said, “If you think you’re going to take this book and change it around, and Hollywoodize it and change the ending… that’s going to cost you.

Oh, and as we all know he was also a star on Saturday Night Live, and he’s been in about 2,000 movies. However, keep reading and we’ll go over a whole list of stuff you did NOT know about Steve Martin.

Mitch Hedberg – Serious Comedian

Mitch HedbergMitch Hedberg was one of my favorite comedians. He had a really dry sense of humor and was absolutely brilliant when it came to one liners. For example:

I like escalators because an escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You’ll never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience.

Both his jokes, and his delivery are unique and he cracked me up. Unfortunately he died in 2005 (of a drug overdose), so we won’t be getting any more of his comedic genius.

These two videos are from a special that was recorded for Comedy Central. I’m sure they are in violation of some sort of terms on YouTube, so don’t be surprised if they don’t stay up long. In the meantime, enjoy them while they are around!

This Guy is Way More Musical Than You

Reggie WattsReggie Watts is a musical genius. Seriously, watch what this guy does with a little digital recorder hooked up to an audio system. Is it just me or is there anyone else that thinks the phrase “he’s got more talent in his little finger than you do in your entire body” applies?

By the way, if you want to see more of Reggie, here is his MySpace page, and here are more of his videos on Vimeo or SuperDeluxe.

Australian Comedy – The Front Fell Off

The Front Fell OffThis is a little skit which was apparently first featured on the Taproot Blog. I have no idea who produced it or why, but it’s quite a funny parody of a politician explaining an oil spill.

I’m guessing it is from an Australian comedy TV show, so if one of you knows a little more detail about where this came from it would be great.

Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek from Jeopardy!

Will Ferrell SNL JeopardyThis post is dedicated to Jimbeau. Ahh Tribeck but I think you do!

So, someone put together a pretty complete compilation of Saturday Night Live skits that feature Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek and Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery. They actually took the time to cut just the Sean Connery parts and splice them all together.

This is one of my favorite SNL series of all time, so I hope you enjoy.

My Favorite Comedians – Dat Phan

Dat PhanDat Phan is hilarious. He was the winner of the Last Comic Standing show, and he’s made appearances on all the late night talk shows as well as touring around the country.

He also had his own special on Comedy Central which I’ve watched about 5 times. He kills me every time. Recently I came across it on YouTube, so I thought I’d share it. Enjoy!

Tom Mabe’s Telemarketing Revenge

Tom MabeTom Mabe is a comedian who specializes in exacting revenge on people who generally annoy the public. He captured quite a bit of attention when he began torturing the telemarketers that called his home. One particularly amusing recording has been put to video along with a real time transcript. It is absolutely hilarious!

Be warned that these may not be entirely appropriate for children. I’d advise pre-screening to make a determination…

Bubba’s View on Torture

T. BubbaI got the following e-mail passed to me the other day, and though I don’t usually condone the propagation of false information, this is just too funny not to share…

T. Bubba Bechtol, a part time City Councilman from Midland, TX, was asked on a local live radio talk show the other day just what he thought of the allegations of torture of the terrorist prisoners.

His reply prompted his ejection from the studio, but to thunderous applause from the audience. “If by hooking up an Terrorist prisoner’s scrotum to a car’s battery cables will save one American GI’s life, then I have just two things to say”:
