Movie Trailer: The Hobbit

For anyone who is a fan of The Lord of the Rings series, this is going to be big. Warner Brothers has released the trailer for the new Hobbit.

The Hobbit is, of course, the book that started it all. And it’s nice to see Gandalf the Grey leading the cast for what is sure to be a blockbuster release. I for one will definitely go to the theatre to see this movie. How about you?

Stirring Coffee Cinemagraph

What is a cinemagraph? To learn that, it is best to go to the experts. In this case, those two would be artistic duo Jaime Beck and Kevin Burg, who have worked for more than a year experimenting and perfecting this unique brand of photography. According to them, cinemagraphs are “something more than a photo but less than a video”.

This is certainly a wonderful, if not explanatory, way of defining it. But what are they really? Simply put, they are the next generation on animated GIF images; moving pictures that help tell a small story in a single instant.

Elegant, expressive and all around amazing, Burg and Beck have truly taken these photos somewhere no one would have expected. They have now been elevated to an entirely new genre, which isolates sections of an image to create movement, either simple or complex.

Sources

It wasn’t until recently that these two really showcased their work. It all came to a head at this year’s New York Fashion Week, back in September. They took a number of photographs and created a gorgeous set of cinemagraphs that stand alone. They made a whole new form of art. All of their shots can be seen at their blog, From Me To You.

Cinemagraph/Subtle GIF Tutorial – This is a basic GIF, which uses a somewhat different process than the others. But this tutorial has taken the more subtle approach, trying to create movement so small that at first you might not catch it. The picture itself is beautiful, and a perfect example of how you don’t need much to create a great effect.

The Professional Russian Demonstrates the Power of Various Handguns

We’ve been looking at a lot of cute videos recently, but this one is NOT cute. It’s manly. In a very Russian sort of way.

Everyone’s friend, the Professional Russian, demonstrates the power of several handguns ranging from a 9mm to a 357 Magnum by shooting one gallon jugs of water. Its easy to get a clear feel for the amount of power these weapons possess from this sort of demonstration, and frankly it’s just fascinating to watch thing basically blowing up.

As always, guns are dangerous. I do not recommend you try anything like this at home. Or anywhere for that matter.

Why I Follow @Jane_Bot on Twitter

@janebotThis is a new series I’m launching here on OneMansBlog designed to introduce you guys to some of the people I follow on Twitter, and explain exactly why I follow them. I’m going to do this for two reasons:

  1. There are still a lot of people who think that Twitter is a silly little site where people talk about what they eat. They are wrong. If you follow the right people, Twitter can be an amazing tool for education, entertainment and more.
  2. The biggest problem with Twitter is finding quality people to follow. Its taken me years to amass the folks I follow, though I add and delete people occasionally. So I might as well help you guys find new quality folks to keep an eye on.

The first person I’m going to tell you about is @Jane_Bot. I know almost nothing about her, but here is what I DO know…
