I was trying to read up on all the latest updates in Japan as a result of the recent earthquake and tsunami, so I thought I would combine my findings into a blog post to save everyone else a little time surfing around.

Tsunami Wave Height

Here’s a good look at the tsunami that did all the damage. The following image from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) illustrates the expected wave heights and location after the March 11, 2011 Japanese earthquake. Note that the deep purple color is 120cm in height, or about 4 feet.

The Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster Reconstructed

Space Shuttle Columbia DisasterSix years ago, at exactly this moment, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated above the skys south of Dallas, TX in a catastrophe that shocked the world. I think it’s appropriate that we honor the memory of those fallen astronauts who gave their lives in the quest to expand human knowledge.

Chris Valentines produced the following video by reconstructing the entire Space Shuttle Columbia disaster and synchronizing a number of video and audio recordings into a single real time stream of the disaster. He’s also got a lot more analysis and commentary on the timeline of events on his site.

News Flash: Earthquake in Chicago, I Sleep Through It

This week I’ve been to Las Vegas, Iowa, and Chicago (where I currently sit writing this post). And of all the exciting things to happen, last night a near record breaking earthquake struck Illinois.

(CNN) — A magnitude-5.2 earthquake, centered 131 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, shook southern Illinois early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

1980 – Lake Completely Drains After Drilling Accident

Lake PeigneurIn 1980 Texaco was doing exploratory drilling for oil in Lake Peigneur, a shallow man-made lake near New Iberia, LA. Although many of the facts from that day are lost, what we do know is that someone miscalculated and drilled right through the lake and into a salt mine below.

It’s generally accepted that the drill punctured the roof of the third level of the mine. This created an opening in the bottom of the lake, similar to removing the drain plug from a bathtub. The lake then drained into the hole, expanding the size of that hole as the soil and salt were washed into the mine by the rushing water, filling the enormous caverns left by the removal of salt over the years.
