The Amazing Gigantic Ant Colony

0

Ant ColonyImagine that a whole colony of ants hauled 40 tons of dirt out of the ground to build a home, the equivalent of building the Great Wall of China, and then some scientists come along and pour 10 tons of concrete in it so they can see what the colony looked like.

I’m pretty sure the ants didn’t appreciate it, but it was awesome nonetheless!

Last Night I Dreamt of Bed Bugs…

0

Just a strange little thing I had to share.

Last night I distinctly remember dreaming about bed bugs. But not in bed. I was working on my computer in my office and all of a sudden I started finding the damn little insects on my keyboard… my monitor… and I don’t know where else. I remember being really annoyed and having a can of pest spray.

Well, that’s about it. But I guess I must have taken the research on that Bed Bugs article a little too far, and now I can’t get them out of my head!

Bedbugs – They’re Comin to Get Ya!

Bedbug CloseupI bet everyone that reads this is going to start itching, and then check underneath your bed! Sorry, but that can’t be helped. You see it seems that bedbugs, also known as Cimex Lectularius (sounds even creepier doesn’t it), are making a comeback.

Bedbug BitesThe bloodsucking bugs were virtually eradicated in the United States in the 1950s. But they are now showing up practically everywhere—nursing homes, jails, apartment buildings, dormitories (video: bedbugs plaguing hotels and houses). There has been a 500% increase in the last few years!

Experts blame the resurgence on increased international travel, immigration, changes in pest-control practices, and the bugs’ growing resistance to insecticides.

Bedbugs can live for a year without a blood meal, but once they start biting their victims may be plagued with multiple bites each night.

The Scariest Fungus on Earth

0

Killer FungusThe Cordyceps fungus is the creepiest, scariest fungus on the planet. Just watching this video creeps me out.

Basically this fungus attacks all manner of insects and after driving them crazy it kills them, eats them, and grows out of them like some kind of re-run from the movie Alien.

Seriously, this freakish spectacle from the insect kingdom is not for the faint of heart.

Interesting Insect Facts

BugsI don’t know what compelled me to compile this list, but I was reading some little bit of insect trivia and I got off on a tear.

Not only did I compile a bunch of insect trivia, but you can look forward to a series of other interesting trivia topics to come…
