Photos From the Magnificent Island of Santorini, Greece

3

Oia-Santorini-Greece-17Three years ago on my old blog I wrote about our vacation to the Island of Santorini in Greece and posted quite a few photos. As I look back and review them, I still love those pictures. However, since I’ve been practicing with Photoshop lately I decided to go back and grab some of those old photos and see what I could do to enhance them a bit.

The only problem is that I shot all of these in JPG originally and not RAW. This limits my ability to do some additional editing, but still, I think the results speak for themselves.

Oh, and for the record, these photos are specifically from the town of Oia (pronounced “E-uh”) on Santorini. The famous Oia sunset, considered by many as one of the most beautiful in the world, keeps tourists flocking to the island of Santorini, waiting for the moment when the sun slips down on the calm sea of the caldera. It is truly one of the most magnificent sites on Earth.

75 Trillion Crabs Swarm Christmas Island

4

Christmas Island CrabsOk. This is truly unbelievable. When I say that 75 Trillion (with a T) crabs swarm Christmas Island, I am not exaggerating or kidding. You just have to watch this video, as creepy as it is, to believe this.

By the way, you can read all about the Christmas Island red crabs over on Wikipedia, or on the Christmas Island National Park site.

Off Roading in a Jeep 4×4 on Hawaii

0

Jeep Going HorizontalAnd now I present for your viewing pleasure about 20 minutes of off-road footage shot during our vacation on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Jeep Camera MountThis is all Point-of-View videography, so you’re more or less seeing what we saw when we were driving – at least through the front window. The way I accomplished this was to use a small clamp-on camera mount combined with my Panasonic FX07 digital camera.

The camera has optical image stabilization, so the ride doesn’t look quite as bumpy as it actually was.

I’ve Never Seen So Much Lava…

0

Liquid Hot MagmaSince my family is planning on taking a trip to Hawaii in a few months I was thinking about the things to see and do on the big island. Now, I’ve been there before and one of the highlights of the trip for me was going to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park and watching the lava flow.

If you’ve never seen it in person, I highly recommend you book a trip to do so! This is one of the most awe inspiring things in nature. When the liquid hot magma reaches the surface and becomes lava it is up to 2,200 degrees (1,200 C). For the sake of comparison, the gas forge I use for Blacksmithing will get up to about that temperature and if you leave a piece of steel inside at that temperature it will literally carbonize the steel (think burn the steel to a powder).
