The Fountains of Bellagio in High Definition

bellagio-fountainsAs a follow up to yesterday’s post with photos from Las Vegas, here is a video that I shot of the fountains outside the Bellagio with the same camera, the Canon 5D Mark II using the Canon 15mm Fisheye lens.

I’ve never seen anyone else shoot the fountains with a fisheye, but it works out well as long as you keep the lens parallel to the horizon as I’ve more or less managed here.

By the way, I recommend you watch this in full screen view. You can do that by clicking on the little arrows in the bottom right corner of the video window.

99 Photos From the Las Vegas Strip

New York, NY Statue of Liberty - Las VegasI’ve been in Las Vegas for the Parallel’s convention over the last few days. Since I’ve been lugging my huge camera around taking pictures quite a few folks asked me to share them so they could take them home as well! So here you all go!

These photos were captured on a Canon 5D Mark II using either a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens, a Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye Lens, or a Lensbaby loaned to me by Cali Lewis.

Pole Dancers at the Flamingo Casino in Las Vegas

Pole Dancers at FlamingoWell, I’ve written about the Pole Dancing craze that seems to be sweeping the world. But in this case, there are a couple of ladies who are on the job over at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino and they aren’t just doing this for the exercise.

The setup for this video is that we were walking down the strip and as we came upon the front entrance to the Flamingo you could see these ladies going to town on the top of this platform. As you’ll see, it provided quite a compelling reason to come in and take a look.

Sights and Sounds of Freemont Street in Las Vegas, Nevada

Freemont Street ExperienceWhenever I go down to Freemont Street in Las Vegas I’m always surprised again by just how different it is from The Strip, and how cool, cheap and fun it is!

Freemont Street is basically an outdoor, covered mall connecting about 10 older casinos plus a bunch of shops and restaurants. Of course, the main attraction is the actual covered canopy.

The LED display “canopy”, rising 90 feet in height and stretching 1,400 feet along the Fremont Street Experience promenade from Main Street to Fourth Street is held up by 16 columns, each weighing 26,000 pounds and can support 400,000 pounds, and 43,000 struts.

Las Vegas’ McCarran Airport Has Best Free WiFi on Earth!

I had some videos I needed to upload in Vegas, but The Mirage’s WiFi was so slow I was getting 30 – 40kb uploads and ocassional dropped connections. When I got to the airport to head home I fired up the WiFi on my iPhone and ran a speed test. Unbelievably, I got 2mb upload speeds!

So, I whipped out my laptop and proceeded to upload a 1.3gb file to Viddler in about 30 minutes at a sustained average rate of 650kb. You can see the results of the test and upload below.

Many thanks to the folks at McCarran who make this possible. If only everyone was as cool as you!

Gambling and Gluttony in Las Vegas

john-p-wins-againFolks, I went to Las Vegas last week for business meetings, but during the evening I did take a little break from working on Layered Technologies and Woopra stuff for a few hours to go have dinner at the Bellagio Buffet, and then do a little gambling after dinner.

Had such a great time that I thought I’d share it with you guys.

3 Card Poker Rules and Strategy

3 Card PokerIn keeping with my ongoing theme of posting casino games, I present for your entertainment the classic 3 Card Poker! (Don’t forget we’ve also got Blackjack and Roulette.)

3 Card Poker (or tri-card poker as it’s also called) is an American version of a British game called Brag. This game originated over three hundred years ago as a game known as Primero, a fast-moving betting game using only three cards. As the game evolved, it became known as Post-and-Pair and then again as Brag. This game made it to the States as Casino Brag and Brit-Brag, but eventually evolved again into the game we now know as 3 Card Poker.

The game is comprised of two different components and here is how they are played…

Online Roulette Game and Basic Roulette Strategy

RouletteRoulette is a casino and gambling game named after the French word meaning “small wheel”. In the game a croupier spins a wheel in one direction, then spins a ball in the opposite direction around a tilted circular surface running around the circumference of the wheel. The ball eventually falls on to the wheel and into one of 37 (in European roulette) or 38 (in American roulette) colored and numbered pockets on the wheel.

Albert Einstein is reputed to have stated, “You cannot beat a roulette table unless you steal money from it.” And indeed he was mathematically correct. Roulette is an absolute game of chance in which the house odds are stacked from 2-5% against you. Still, the little game I’ve embedded here is awfully fun to play!
