How to Disable Comments on All Images in WordPress

WordPress has long had a major problem, that has yet to be solved by the development team. Namely, the fact that there is no way to globally disable commenting on certain types of posts or pages – most notably images and media files.

Spammers have been attacking blogs for a very long time and targeting image and media file attachment pages. If you wonder what I mean by that, click on the thumbnail image above. You’ll see that it takes you to a page with a bigger embedded version of the image. Normally, those pages allow you to leave comments (you’ll notice that here on OMB it doesn’t).

The Massive Gallery of Funny License Plate Pictures (Over 230 of ‘Em!)

Do you love seeing funny license plates on cars as you’re driving down the road as much as I do? Well, after seeing a funny one while coming home from the office the other day, I got to surfing and collecting a few license plates pictures… and I might have gotten a little carried away!

What we end up with is probably the single biggest collection of license plates on a page anywhere on the Internet! Hopefully it won’t:

  1. Crash the webserver trying to serve up a billion things to every single visitor
  2. Choke your web browser, trying to download all the thumbnails on the page!

As usual, you can click through on any of the thumbnails to see the full size version of the image.

Hey, by the way, if you enjoy the post do me a favor and share it on Twitter, Google+ and Facebook. I sure would appreciate it!

McIntosh MXA60 Review – Or Why You Might Want a $7,500 Audio System

McIntosh MXA60 Bookshelf System

McIntosh MXA60 Bookshelf System

Most of you know by now that I tend to appreciate some of the finer things in life. I have a habit of picking up exotic cars, I have no problem with a $3,000 set of kitchen knives, and I like to fly first classon occasion.

So, I was a little excited when McIntosh Labs sent over a brand spankin’ new MXA60 bookshelf audio system for review. After all, you can’t exactly run down to Best Buy and pick one up. You’re going to have to locate a dealer and then dish out $7,500 to be one of the few people fortunate enough to own one of these babies.

After hanging on to the MXA60 for a couple of months it managed to make me do something that very, very few products do. Love it. Lets start with my video review from GeekBeat.TV.

Stuck in Customs HDR Book Contest Day 1 – Landscape Photos

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m judging Trey’s photo contest in which PeachPit is giving away 3 copies of his soon to be released book A World in HDR. I’ve been watching the submissions (anyone can participate – you just Tweet links to photos!) today, and I’ve collected several of my favorites below.

It’s was very difficult picking a winner because all of the submissions are really fantastic. The photographers did a great job, and the people who submitted the images had a keen eye. But don’t you worry your pretty little heads… I picked a winner down below! ;-)

So, today is Landscape day and let me give everyone two big hints if you want a better chance at winning:

  1. Make sure you link to an image that is a reasonable size. If I can’t view it in at least 1024×768 it is definitely not going to win. I mean who wants to squint at a tiny little image. Just upload it in 1920×1080 and you are going to be safe. Oh, and don’t put ugly watermarks all over it either…
  2. If it’s not Creative Commons licensed then it’s not going to make it onto my blog or any other reputable ones either. Which means that you also aren’t going to get a powerful backlink. Or the traffic that comes with it. Using a CC license doesn’t erode your ability to sell commercial licenses, it just lets you get free publicity from people like me who might use it non-commercially.

That’s it! Off to the photos now!

Corrupting the Youth

You know, people often tell me that I’m a terrible influence, and frequently warn me when I’m around the kiddos to watch my mouth. But I’ll have you know that I had nothing to do with supplying this kiddo with booze and smokes!

A Direct Comparison of Picasa for Mac vs. iPhoto

picasaYesterday was the day I’ve been waiting on for months. Google finally released the popular, and FREE, Picasa image management software for the Mac!

Let me explain. You see, a while back I was forcibly converted to the Mac at work. At first I complained. A lot. But later it grew on me. Now, even though I hate to admit it, I have to say I actually prefer the Mac for most computing operations. One of the things that I did not enjoy, however, was the pathetic iPhoto software which was pretty much the only game in town for Mac users… until today.

So, Picasa, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways: [Read more...]

The Greatest Graduation Photo Ever

I’ve got no idea where this picture came from, but I’m guessing it’s from somewhere in India. It’s got to be one of the greatest graduation photos of all time! And by the way, the cameraman MUST have been in on this to snap the photo at just the right time…
