Lost Comments

I’m very sorry to those of you affected by this, but this evening I made a mistake and accidentally erased a few comments.

My anti-spam plugin had caught a few “good” messages, and I was talking on the phone when I was trying to “de-spam” them. Well, I must have accidentally hit the delete button while I was distracted and lost the messages. There were at least 3, and to make matters worse I know that two of them were very long comments and I was sincerely looking forward to reading them. (One of them was on The Rules of Islamic Wife Beating.)

Again, I apologize and I hope you don’t take it personally or think I was censoring anything on purpose. If you noticed that a comment you posted is not showing up this is why. I would encourage you to try again, although I understand if you decide not to.

John

New Top Commenters List on One Mans Blog

Some of you may have noticed that earlier today I added a feature in the sidebar that displays the top commenters. There are two little catches to this new feature:

  1. You must be registered and logged in when commenting to turn your name into a link to your Web site.
  2. You must enter your Web site address in your user profile in order for the link to work.

There is one very special thing about this new feature. The outbound links are normal ones which convey full search engine benefits. People often pay a couple hundred dollars a month to get a link to their site from a site as highly ranked as this one, so I guess you could say that it literally pays to be active here!

Quick Site Update

John PozadzidesJust a quick note to let everyone know that the site has been partially migrated to the new server. That is to say that the database is now running on the new big daddy machine, although the Web server is still on the old machine. (If you’re a new subscriber you can select the “Digg” related tag below to see the history.)

For those of you who may have been refraining from Digging articles in order to help me keep the server running – Thanks! And it should no longer be necessary! The new configuration should handle a traffic spike from Digg now (fingers crossed), and it’ll be even better in a day or two when everything gets entirely moved to the new machine.

So, at this point nothing would please me more than to see all the articles getting Dugg again. :-)

John

PS – Thanks for everyone’s patience as the site goes through the growing pains!

Everything You Never Wanted to Know About Blog Spam

The more popular a site is, the more under attack it is, and the more it costs to serve web pages.

SPAM sucks doesn’t it? Trust me… I know. I created this video as an open message for the entire blogging community, but also specifically to help educate my own readers about some of the issues we’re facing on One Man’s Blog currently.

As the popularity of this blog has increased, so have the number of attacks from automated systems wishing to spam the comments on every single post. This can create a serious nightmare for a blogger like myself because, after all, there is only one of me.

Big Changes to One Man’s Blog

John PozadzidesGood Morning everyone! Today I’ve made a signifigant change to the theme of the blog. I did this for a few reasons, all of which have to do with improving the user experience.

I’ll issue another more complete post later, but in the meantime I’m in the process of de-bugging this theme, so if you run across any issues please drop me a comment here and let me know so I can resolve them quickly.

Also, if you have any suggestions for changes or improvements please make them.

One Man Loses Battle to DIGG Again!

As I’ve said a few other times now… welcome visitors and new subscribers! Please note that the servers performance is quite erratic at the moment due to the fact that there have already been over 45,000 visitors in the last 8 hours.

This is the third time One Man’s Blog has hit the home page of Digg in the last month (everyone can thank Jimbeau for kicking it off this time. :-) As I write this the How I’d Hack Your Passwords post has been Dugg nearly 1,700 times and is occupying the number 1 position on the Digg Technology page. Thanks to everyone that helped popularize this article!

For those of you that are new, please know that I’ve already purchased a massive new server to move the blog to… I’ve just not completed the migration yet because of a technical problem.

I promise to ratchet the urgency up a notch on getting moved to the new server, so please feel free to keep Digging, bookmarking and spreading the word in general and I’ll keep throwing more and more hardware at the site to handle however much load we can generate.

Thanks for everyone’s patience yet again!

One Man’s 500th Post

John PozadzidesHave you ever been driving down the road and noticed that you were getting to one of those interesting mile markers on the odometer of your car? Like, you look down and it says 9,996 miles and you’re thinking, ‘Wow! I want to watch it roll over to 10,000.’ Then you get distracted doing something else and almost miss it…

Well, that’s what almost happened to me. I was so busy doing other things that I almost missed the fact that this very post is my 500th post!

One Man’s Blog Banned in China

Just a few days ago I read about yet another bit of unbelievable Internet censorship coming out of China. It seems they have decided to eliminate access to the popular blogging site LiveJournal – effectively shutting down access to 1.8 million blogs!

Banned In ChinaThis got me thinking. Given that I routinely report on Chinese abuses I wondered how many – if any – of my readers were coming from China.

For those of you who are not aware, Web servers collect various generic statistics such as the IP address of visitors. These IPs can be traced back to the country of origin and I can view a report of where visitors are coming from.

As you can see in the attached image I haven’t had a single visitor from China. This simply cannot be a coincidence.

Sorry About Site Slowness Once Again

Three weeks ago I thanked everyone for their patience after a rough couple of days following a flood of traffic to the server.

John PozadzidesAt the time I mentioned that I was going to be upgrading to a new server, and also that I was optimizing the code on the site to help pages load faster. Well, I’ve purchased a new mother-of-a-server that is actually twice as big as I was originally planning on, but I’ve hit a snag with migrating the database to the new server.

In the meantime, another of my article’s has hit the front page of Digg and I’m having a very hard time keeping things going. As of 4am today there have already been over 15,000 visitors. This is even more traffic than last time, so I’m anticipating that for the next few days the site might be slow.
