3 Predictions for Pinterest, the New Social Media Boomer

Pinterest is undeniably the new kid on the social network block. Made to be the ultimate in content collection efficiency, it works by placing a button in your browser’s toolbar. As you surf the web, any time you find a picture that you like or want to remember or share, you click on the Pin It button.

Predictions for Pinterest

Rather than bookmark it like you might be used to – which is essentially what other apps, such as Read It Later, do – it “pins” it to a virtual bulletin board associated with your account. This board can then be organized into other boards, which can be shared through various social media sites.

It is a simple concept that seems more like an app than a network or website. But Pinterest has picked up a huge amount of traction in the past six months or so. Now it is quickly surging in popularity to the point where it is gaining more momentum than StumbleUpon and Reddit, two content-sharing giants.

With that in mind, what is next for the fun picture-pinning site? We can only speculate, and so here are three predictions about what might just happen in the near future.

Pinned Items Will Provide a Better Web-Wide Shopping Experience

Pinned Items Will Provide a Better Web-Wide Shopping Experience

I have been seeing more people using Pinterest as a way of showing off products that they want to buy. Some are more like visual daydreams, showing the house they would love if they only had the money for it. But the boards are also being used to create wardrobes, design ideas and shopping wishlists.

Of course, there are already apps that are compatible with more than one site. But this is perhaps the first that allows images with source links from literally anywhere. So that seriously increases the usability as a shopping client that I believe we will see become more popular.

Shopping sites could possibly take advantage of this, striking a deal with Pinterest to entice customers into using it to build a list of products.

Similar Niche Platforms Will Begin to Pop Up

While the most popular social media sites are more broad and general than Pinterest, they all have a schtick. However, many others are operating with a specific niche or purpose in mind. While there are many of these, such as YouTube or Vimeo for videos, we will probably see more popping up as smaller ventures in the near future.

A Buyout War Is Inevitable

Whenever a site like this takes off like a shot, there are buyers waiting in the wings to offer millions to turn it into a more mainstream business model. Large online corporations are happy to gather projects and real estate to adapt later or just increase their revenue by applying their massive resources to a better marketing campaign.

Already, a number of sources have speculated that Google will be the inevitable victor in what is sure to be a bidding war for Pinterest. However, I am not sure that the creators will sell. There is a great deal of potential, and already this is becoming a go-to social media site. It just might be that it stays in the original hands of the creators and increases from there.

Conclusion

These are all speculation, but logical speculation. Whatever does happen, however, Pinterest is sure to be one site that really launches itself into something special – especially given how well it has grown already.

You Know What Drives Me Nuts About Guy Kawasaki?

Have you ever had one of those friends who you take to the movie theatre with you for the first time, and they kind of interrupt the movie at the very beginning by talking? But you figure it’s an isolated incident so you answer them, laugh at their joke, and just shrug it off.

But then they do it again, and again, and again…

After a while, even though you love this person, you’re ready to strangle them? Well, that is kind of what Guy Kawasaki is becoming to me. Let me explain…

Twitter Evolution: How and Why Twitter Has Been Changing

Twitter Bird SketchTwitter, the micro-blogging service that once had people questioning how 140 characters could possibly be of use, now has more than 200 million users – and that number is growing. There’s little doubt that their hold on the community is largely thanks to its new features and innovations.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the distance that Twitter has come in functionality, how those changes have impacted the uses of the medium, and how the desires of users have affected Twitter development.

How to Search Twitter for Old Tweets – And How to Archive Them

John P's Brilliance on Twitter

Let’s face it. Every once in a while, you grace the Twitter world with your brilliance. Well, for some people…like John P….it happens on a daily basis. The problem is, when you want to go back and admire said brilliance, it can be difficult to find! Twitter only lets you search so far back. That’s just not enough when you need to find a link you or a friend posted, or look up a quote or a funny joke. There are many, many reasons we look up old tweets, and third party websites have come to our rescue! Let’s take a look at some options for searching old tweets and backing up your tweet stream.

Why I Opted OUT of the Mercedes Benz Tweet Race (or… How NOT to Run a Contest)

Last week I came across what sounded like a neat little Twitter contest that Mercedes Benz was running. As a Mercedes owner I took an interest when I saw that they were looking for people who were willing to drive a Mercedes across the country while tweeting for a chance to win a new car plus a couple of tickets to the super bowl.

So, I tossed my name in the hat because it sounded like fun. Lo and behold, I was accepted into what Mercedes referred to as “the Second Round”, in which I was asked to submit an application. At first I was a little excited, though I figured there are probably a million people in the “Second Round” anyway…

THEN I read the actual “application”. And wow, I couldn’t believe what all they were asking for!

What the Contest Promises

Here’s what the official contest tells you before you enter:

Four two-person teams will embark on Feb. 2, 2011, from one of four cities – New York, L.A., Chicago or Tampa – with a pair of Super Bowl tickets and specially outfitted Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

They’ll need to beat out three other teams headed to Dallas. They’ll need to complete a series of challenges along the way. And they’ll need gallons of Tweets from their Twitter followers to fuel them to victory.

If you were “lucky” enough to be chosen for the second round of the contest then you received a Twitter DM (direct message) instructing you to email the contest administrator for your application packet – which I did.

What NOT To Do When Running a Contest

In response, an email arrived with an 8.3MB attached 11 page application. Yes, eleven pages. (BTW, posting this disqualifies me from the contest, but as you’ll see in a minute, it doesn’t matter). A couple of notes for anyone considering running a Twitter contest:

  • A lot of people’s email accounts might not accept a 8MB attachment. And even if they do, what if they are traveling or something (which I was)? Why not upload it somewhere and give us a link. Huge surprise attachments are just plain rude, and have been since like 1999.
  • You might not want to give people an 11 page application to start with for a freaking contest.

Problems, Problems

Ok, to be honest, even though the 11 page application was a bit of a shocker I was still considering it. But there were two big problems:

  1. I received it on December 25, and they required a complete response by December 29. Even taking out the fact that we are talking about the holiday season, the application not only requires written response, but it also requires a photograph with your driving partner as well as a 2 minute video with your partner. I guess they didn’t consider the fact that people might not be in town!
  2. MUCH more importantly, this process requires that every applicant submit to an unbelievably invasive background search. I mean that I literally could not believe the nerve of what they were asking for.

So It’s Like a Job and Going to Pay Off, Right?

When I hear all of that I think, this thing better really, really pay off right! NO! According to the competition Terms here is what you get:

Contestants must be available beginning at 9 am on February 1, 2011 through February 9, 2011.

Compensation will not be provided to Contest Teams, including but not limited to, reimbursement for lost wages or business losses. Lets Examine the Prizes

Both the Winning Driver and the Winning Co-Driver of the winning Contest Team will receive a 2012 Mercedes-Benz C250 Coupe, base model, with winner’s choice of paint color (Prize Vehicles).

Oh, there is one little catch:

Winners of Prize Vehicles acknowledge and accept that the Prize Vehicles will not be available to the winners until model retail launch in October 2011.

Well, and another much bigger catch:

…all federal, state and local taxes associated with the acceptance of any and all prizes connected with this Contest are the sole responsibility of the winner.

To Sum It All Up

So, to wrap it all up for you,

  • They ran a “contest” that needs lots of participation, and which is dependant on the social media sphere.
  • God only knows how many people’s lives they are going to investigate like crazy to narrow the field to 4 teams.
  • 3 out of 4 final teams are going to have to give up a week to compete and get NOTHING!
  • You have to accept ALL liability while you are competing for free in their contest!
  • They can decide to change the contest prize on you at any time – so you might not even win the car they are holding the contest for!
  • If you do win, you aren’t going to get the prize for nearly a year.
  • You are signing over your name, likeness, etc. FOREVER for them to use in any way they want GLOBALLY (even if you don’t win and get NOTHING for participating).
  • And if you win you’re going to be responsible for paying for taxes on the value of the vehicle as if it was income. So hope you have many $thousands of cash laying around to take care of Uncle Sam.

All of this just puts a really, really bad taste in my mouth for Mercedes Benz. Which of course is the complete opposite of what I suspect they were looking for. Sooo… I have just one question for Mercedes:

Who the hell did you hire to run this contest, and what were you thinking???

How to Automatically Confirm or Deny All Invites on Facebook

I’ve got a lot of friends on Facebook. And those friends are very busy inviting me to events, pages, Farmville, Mafia Wars, and every other little thing anyone ever invented for Facebook. The problem is, I don’t have time to go through literally hundreds of invitations to confirm or deny them. (And I mainly just want to deny them…)

So I was looking for a way to automatically deny all invitations on Facebook when I came across this nice little Firefox extension that lets you do just that! Well, it will also let you accept all invites on Facebook, if you’ve got a lot of extra time in your life to spend looking at all that stuff.

But if you have a whole boatload of page invites, friend invites, calendar invites, game invites, or any other invites that you want to either automatically deny or confirm – here is how to do it!

Social Media: What It Is, How To Use It, and Where To Begin

Social media is an all-encompassing term used to describe any of several online channels that utilize the technology to facilitate social interaction through written, visual, or audible communication. Examples of different types of Social Media sites include:

The use of social media as a marketing and promotional tool and strategy is becoming more and more popular with businesses because it can be an extremely effective way to promote products and services to a targeted audience. Websites can function as a static billboard to promote products, services, or ideas – but social media opens up a dynamic dialogue with your audience, allowing for interaction and personal connection.

How to Invite ALL Facebook Friends to a Group, Event or Page

I set up a couple of groups on Facebook – our Wealth Nation group (PLEASE JOIN!) and the Stop the Farmville Madness!!! group – and wanted to invite all my friends, but it would have taken an eternity because for some strange reason Facebook doesn’t allow you to “select all” friends when sending an invite. I mean, they’ll let you do it… but only if you click one at a time! Uugh.

Well anyway I went on a little search and found that you could cheat the Facebook system by inserting a little javascript to make it happen! Here is how to do it:

  1. Go to your Facebook Event, Facebook Group or Facebook page and click “Invite People”.
  2. Once the page has loaded you should see all of your friends, but they are not selected.
  3. At this point, copy and paste the javascript code below into your Web browser’s address bar, then hit “Enter”.
  4. If all goes well, it selects all of your friends!
  5. IMPORTANT: NOW YOU MUST WAIT!!! If you have a lot of Facebook friends, you have to leave that window open for a long time so it sends all of the invitations! I have about 1,400 and it took like 15-20 minutes to send all of the invitations. The Invite window will close when its done. So exercise patience!!!!!!!!!!

javascript:elms=document.getElementById('friends').getElementsByTagName('li');for(var fid in elms){if(typeof elms[fid] === 'object'){fs.click(elms[fid]);}}

If that first method doesn’t work for you give this a try:

Right click the “friend box” and open it in a new tab:
Then paste this ==> javascript: fs.select_all()

Finally, there is now a GreaseMonkey script for Firefox to Invite All Facebook Friends if you want to try that as well..

Oh, and by the way, if you found this helpful please tweet it or share it on Facebook to help others find it too. The more people who share it, the more people it helps! It takes some time for all of the Facebook invites to be sent. They go into a queue. So if you saw them all get selected, just be patient. The messages WILL get delivered over the next 24 hours or so.

UPDATE

If none of that is working for you, Michael Quale developed a little Chrome plugin which I personally tested and it did the trick. You can get it on the Chrome browser store here. And here is a little video of it working.

Again, that one is only for Chrome users, but I highly recommend that everyone use Chrome anyway…
