The Geeks Shall Inherit the Airwaves – Why Economics Are Killing ‘Old Media’

media-is-deadFor a long time now I’ve been hearing people predicting the death of traditional media (you know: television, radio, books and newspapers). “Old Media is dead! Long live New Media!”

This is 50% crap, but it’s also 50% true. And since I’ve been fielding a lot of questions about this lately, let me see if I can break it down for outsiders in terms that are a little easier to understand and have some actual logic behind them.

The real magic of “new media” has nothing to do with the people. It is quite simply all about the delivery mechanism.

An Academic Explanation Using Simple Economics

Car FramesIn any industry, the cost of goods produced are ultimately borne by the buyers of the finished product. So, for example, if the price of steel goes up, the price of automobiles goes up as well.

But imagine a situation where a radical new material is developed that costs 1/100th the price of steel, but which is actually stronger, can be made in an ordinary kitchen, and can be used to build cars just as well!

The Greatest TV Bloopers… Ever.

TV BloopersThe other day I was watching the local news and I saw a reporter have a funny little blooper that sidetracked them. I wasn’t recording it or anything, but I later checked YouTube to see if anyone else got it so I could share it. Well, I couldn’t find that one, but boy did I hit the motherload!

So, here are the best news bloopers clips I could find (at least half an hours worth of entertainment). Get some Kleenex, because I was laughing so hard I cried on some of these.

Amazon Unbox Movie and Television Downloads

Amazon Unbox Movie DownloadsI’m a big, big fan of Amazon.com. They really won me over when I bought a $4,000 camcorder from them a while back, and I’m also a member of Amazon Prime which is an $80 annual fee for unlimited next day shipping.

Amazon has now launched a new service they call Unbox which I suppose is a competitor to Apple and WalMart’s movie download services. Anyway, I haven’t had time to check it out fully, but it looks pretty cool. One really interesting feature is that you can “rent” a movie for $1-4 and play it back on a Tivo, iPod or whatever. Hmmm. That would sure beat Blockbuster by a mile! No more driving to the video store, paying $4 per night, and them not always having what you want anyway.

Also, I like this little widget they’ve put together which serves as a sort of virtual bookshelf and lets you scroll through and watch video previews without having to continuously reload the page. Makes it very easy for me to remember which movies I want to add to our current library of hundreds! (Yeah, we’re movie addicts at the Pozadzides’ hacienda.) Also, when you are watching a trailer look at the right bottom corner of the video window and you can click on the little square to make the video take up the full window!

Anyway, if anyone wants to try it out the download / rental thing and give us a review please share the info!

Justin.TV – the Real ‘Truman Show’

Justin TV
This is just unbelievable, and I don’t know how long it will last, but there is a new Web site called Justin.TV which is about a guy, Justin, who is on TV all the time. :-) This is a serious flashback to The Truman Show, a film starring Jim Carey in which his entire life is broadcast on TV.

The only difference is that Justin is actually aware that he’s on film 24 hours a day because he’s the one filming himself.

Sharp 42″ Aquos LCD HDTV Review

Sharp 42My living room wasn’t bringing the kind of audio visual pleasure it once did, so we had to take the step up to a new HD TV. The problem was, which one to get?

The absolute dimensions for our built in cabinetry dictated that we could go no larger than a 40-42″ flat panel TV, depending on the brand. After doing quite a bit of comparative analysis we finally decided on the Sharp 42″ Aquos LCD (LC-42D62U), which we got at Best Buy.

The Adjustable Aluminum TV/Computer Tray

Desk SpecificationsI’ve got to give it up to the designers of this Aluminum tray. Although their English is atrocious, their ingenuity is to be admired. In fact, I think this is one of those “why didn’t anyone think of that before” inventions.
