Social Media: What It Is, How To Use It, and Where To Begin

Social media is an all-encompassing term used to describe any of several online channels that utilize the technology to facilitate social interaction through written, visual, or audible communication. Examples of different types of Social Media sites include:

The use of social media as a marketing and promotional tool and strategy is becoming more and more popular with businesses because it can be an extremely effective way to promote products and services to a targeted audience. Websites can function as a static billboard to promote products, services, or ideas – but social media opens up a dynamic dialogue with your audience, allowing for interaction and personal connection.

Have You Ever AcciTweeted?

AcciTweeting is what happens when you meant to send an SMS to someone, but instead you send a public Tweet. Like for example, I follow my wife @Hollypoz on Twitter. I also get SMS notifications when she tweets. Sometimes I want to send a quick SMS to her, but the last thing from her in my phone actually came from Twitter!

Do you see where this is going?

So, I respond to Twitter as if I was SMSing her, and Voila! The world has my private SMS! :-) Ever happened to you?

PS – AcciTweeting is a spin off of AcciDialing. That is when you already called someone, but you somehow accidentally call them back and don’t know it, and then they have to listen to whatever you are doing while saying, “Hello? Hello!!!” Aaron Phillips taught me that one. He loved to accidial me.

The New Twitter Game – FabriTweet!

Ok everyone, I’m making up a new Twitter / Facebook game. You can use it in either place (or as I plan to do since I use TweetDeck, both).

Tall TaleThis little game is called FabriTweet. And here is how it goes:

  • You fabricate the most outrageous story that you possibly can fit into 140 characters or less.
  • You Tweet it and use the hashtag #fabritweet

I’ve already set my search up in TweetDeck to keep an eye out for FabriTweets, so I hope that someone out there will play along! This could just prove to be a fun creative outlet to provide Christmas cheer all day long.

Twitter Has Been Down for 2.5 Hours, Will We Survive?

Twitter-Over-CapacitySo, for those of you who don’t know it, the world’s most popular micro-blogging platform, Twitter has been completely down for over two and a half hours so far today due to a Denial of Service attack.

Now, Twitter goes down pretty regularly. It’s difficult to scale up this rapidly for any business. But this is the first time that I can remember it being down for so long in a single block, especially in a critical part of the day. And it’s not just that they are serving up their standard “over capacity” message. The entire Web site has vanished!

I think the interesting thing about this is that it should emphasize how vulnerable we all are to relying on a single communication network with our contacts. It demonstrates why having multiple social systems is a good thing. If Twitter is down, one should be able to hop on FaceBook and stay in touch.

Bob Donovan, You Sir (and all the Other Spammers), May Kiss My Ass!

Twitter-SPAMLook, there is no delicate way to put this. Bob Donovan, I hereby formally invite you to participate with me in a no-holds-barred MMA style cage match to be broadcast on live television. I’m 100% serious. Because I want to kick your ass, and I’m quite sure I can do it too.

Wait! What’s Going On Here?

My other dear readers may be asking themselves, who is this Bob Donovan, and what exactly has he done to John P.? Well, I’ve got no idea who Bob Donovan is, but what he did to me was send me an annoying Twitter spam with a link to nothing other than an affiliate site (belonging to 10 Best Hosting 2009).

Bob-Donovan-Twitter-Spam

Oh, and that link does nothing other than direct traffic to the Web site link http://www.10besthosting2009.com/#1492937361/. You see that number at the end? I’m sure that is an affiliate tracking link, and 10 Best Hosting is paying this spammer to fish people in to their Web site. That is assuming they are not directly behind it!

The Real ROI of Online Social Media

Return on InvestmentJason Falls posted an article over on his blog Social Media Explorer a few days ago posing the question, “What is the ROI for Social Media?

Jason’s overriding theme was presented early on in the article:

The problem with trying to determine ROI for social media is you are trying to put numeric quantities around human interactions and conversations, which are not quantifiable.

He sat down with Katie Delahaye Paine and had a conversation regarding this topic.

Tweet Scan and the Woopra Twitter-Storm

Tweet ScanSomeone pointed me in the direction of Tweet Scan, which is a tool that searches the popular micro-blogging site Twitter.

Specifically they wanted me to see the incredible number of Twitter posts going on about Woopra.

I was blown away. Hard to believe that just about every hour of every day someone is talking about Woopra on Twitter. Fantastic!
