Underground Nuclear Test Site Found?

John P.

September 13, 2006 By John P.

Nuclear Test SiteThis US Google Maps view claims to be an underground nuclear test site.

I kind of doubt it because it’s like 50 miles from Vegas. Still, even if it isn’t, it’s a pretty cool impact of some sort. Notice that according to the Google Map scale it is almost 800 feet in diameter. Whatever it was, it took quite a wallop to make that crater.

No problem. If you want to see more cool stuff like that, use google maps, or Google Earth (my personal favorite) and just look around where you found that crater at. There are really interesting/strange things all over the NTS and Edwards AFB. The desert is a pretty interesting place.

I found what appears to be your crater.

If I am not mistaken, it is the Sedan Crater. It was a 104 Kiloton explosion, which displaced 12 million tons of dirt and left a hole in the ground 320 feet deep and 1,280 feet across. Pretty impressive.

While you are on google, look up Project Plowshare. Also look up NTS (Nevada Test Site) while you are at it. Underground nuclear tests release little, if any, radioactive material. That’s why no one does Atmospheric tests anymore, and they are all underground.
