Hey folks, a couple of weeks ago the very eminent, most gracious, and quite handsome (the invoice is in the mail) Frederick Van Johnson and I sat down at opposite ends of the Internet table for a cozy discussion geared towards photographers.
We talked about life, love, Woopra and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for photographers. I will point out that much of the discussion was applicable for just about any website you have although the intention was to answer specific questions that appeal to the needs of those of us who have a thing for lenses. Feel free to take a listen…
Is there any way to find the link to that podcast? I am having trouble locating it.
thank you
James Tooley
Hi John, I was listening to your show via podcast on Google listen. I really enjoyed the advice about using text around embedded video to improve optimization. I also learned about Woopra which I think is fantastic for real time analytics. I really love the dashboard on Woopra it makes me feel like an air traffic controller!
Great content; keep it coming!
I thought this was a very good interview by both of you. It caused me to go back and rediscover Woopra. I set up 3 of my sites on Woopra and downloaded the desktop client.
What you have created is truly amazing in my opinion. I have it opened right now on the monitor beside me. I’m watching 3 current visitors on one of my sites. How they found me and what they are doing navigating around.
I will tell you right now that it is much more interesting watching my Woopra client than watching tweets on Tweetdeck. Plus I’m learning a lot about what is attracting people to my site. Thanks John P.
I listened to this yesterday and was quite intrigued with the woopra stuff. I signed up and will use this as a test on my sites then if it does what I think it will do, I will recommend it to my clients. Thanks for the heads up!
Hey John, I really enjoyed your interview. Could you clarify a couple things for me? When you talked about linking back to your site from the description of an image on flickr, how do you do that? Just with HTML code? Do you have an example I can look at?
Also, I have a WordPress blog, but it’s WordPress.com, not WordPress.org. When you talk about WordPress, are you talking about self-hosted WP blogs or any WP blog? I don’t think I have much flexibility with adding much in the way of extra HTML code (it doesn’t even recognize codes) or CSS, or maybe I can do more and just don’t realize it.
Thanks!
Robin
Hey Robin,
As far as linking back from Twitter is concerned, take a look at some of these as samples from my gallery:

You’ll see that put a couple of links back to this site and also encourage others to use my photos as long as they give attribution.
And you are correct when it comes to WordPress. I was actually talking about the WordPress.org version because the hosted version is very restrictive and hardly lets you do anything. You can’t even use Woopra with it! So I would recommend you get off there as soon as possible.
A good place to start if you want do host your own standalone WordPress install is Bluehost. It will cost you about $7 per month and I know a lot of people that like them.
Cheers,
John P.
