You probably arrived at this page because someone wanted you to know:

Chances are you:
- Were rude, mean or nasty to someone on Facebook or Twitter
- Left a scathing comment on someone’s blog post
- Generally acted in a socially unacceptable manner
…for no good reason.
Other things you should probably know (even though I know – you already know it all):
- You caught an error in a blog post. CONGRATULATIONS!!! What a GENIUS you are! I only spent a few hours writing a story with 100 points, but you found one that was wrong. WOW! I’m so glad you made a federal case out of it, because now we’re so much more enlightened.
- Even though this is only a personal blog for entertainment purposes of course I should be held to the same standards as CNN, right?
- Its a good thing that instead of dropping a comment with a correction you decided to [Tweet / Facebook / Blog] a scathing diatribe. (Sorry, that big word means rant.) I mean, if you had been nice about it there is NO WAY it would have worked, right?
- I’m really, really glad you chose to add value by using an anonymous account! The anonymous@gmail.com email address is a nice touch. As is the non-descript Twitter ID, combined with a lack of personally identifying info. Admirable!
The Douchebag Hall of Fame
Occasionally I’ll feature a special douchebag here. If you’ve got a story to share of someone who was rude, mean and nasty to you online feel free to share and maybe I’ll add them here too. But you have to document WHY they deserve it.
n8d on Twitter
Our first Douchebag, and the one who inspired this post today, is n8d on Twitter. Here’s why:
- I compiled a bunch of news stories as I was learning about the Japanese Earthquake (complete with reference links), and posted them to help people kind of catch up without having to do all the work I had to do.
- n8d found a single inaccuracy and decided to Tweet to the world as well as leave two nasty comments (deleted for good measure). As if the inaccuracy couldn’t have been corrected. I mean, like I chiseled it into a tablet of stone, right?
- Of course this person uses a non-identifiable handle, gmail address, no link to a website, etc.
So, CONGRATULATIONS n8d! You’re Douchebag number 1. Your mother must be so proud.
Just when I was thinking how wonderful it was to see that summary about Japan, sharing it with everyone and bookmarking the link because I am pretty sure it will be a useful resource to refer to when my son works with his school work this summer….hmm.
Reminds me of cheapo classmates in school who waited to point out a spelling error the teacher made in the flow of writing on the blackboard.
While I cannot (read “dare not”) produce with proof all the “douchebags” who have ****ed my life, I thoroughly enjoyed this post! Now, YOU, Mr One Man Blog, are definitely in my Hall of Fame next Sunday!
Wow Dustin, your research is amazing, congratulations. I agree with some of the other comments, if you have reached a point where people start picking holes then you must have a profile and head above the parapet. I wonder what he got out of doing it though, seems odd to me that someone would even think their rantings were of interest! Keep going John, this is an enjoyable blog.
John, this is why, in most cases I don’t even look at the comments. Except in the case of the paleontology blogs I read, the comments only waste time, bandwidth and brain cells. It would be extremely tempting to send this link to all the pompous little minds out there. Thanks for a fantastic post. And yes, I did read all the comments. :)
When you reach success, people always start critisizing you because of jealously, best is to ignore.
John,
Don’t take it personally. Sure, the person may actually be a registered ‘Ed Hardy’ wearing douche, but but it’s not the douche’s fault they are a douche.
Douche’s are simple creatures. They wear their douche persona like a badge of honor. A typo, a misspelling, or a different opinion – to the douche the argument is won when everyone feels bad. It doesn’t matter if the douche is right or wrong. The quintessential douche enjoys the confrontation, and enjoys being right even if they have no information to share. It’s the blood that runs through their veins, because they are lashing out at things they can’t control.
Down a notch: Seriously… Everyone has a choice: To be part of the conversation and add to it, or oppose the conversation and attack the person speaking. When some people don’t like what is being said and feel they have no way to make it go their way – they go on the attack. No good ever comes of it, but it’s a difficult lesson for most people to learn.
Note: I was a SYSOP of a WWIV BBS in 1990, and the douche:’cool dude’ ratio was about the same then as it is now, so I don’t expect any changes soon. My plan is to ignore them, and hope their fake tatoo’d sleeves give them a rash.
Right on the money. The best part is this guy would never say anything to you in person. Oh well, that is what blocking is for yes?
Agreed 100% Ben. People like this hide behind their anonymity, and most of the time they would NEVER act like that in a face to face encounter.
Of course, if they did act like that face to face no one would want anything to do with them. So it’s possible they are such douchebags that they can’t interact face to face and are therefore forced to take it to the Web! :-)
John P.
Hey John! Just wanted to lend a little helping hand here. I did some searching on the internets of sorts and this is what I found.
N8D is actually Nate Dee or at least that is what N8D is short for. Looks like he is originally from Rochester, New York. Moved to Atlanta, Ga for a while while he ran a very mediocre website with some, dare I say, bad art called Strokeful Imagery. (http://www.n8d.org)
Since then he has moved to Tennessee. It seems he lives in or near Antioch, TN as it is just outside of Nashville, TN. A quick search brought up his Foursquare account (http://foursquare.com/n8d) which had him the mayor of a place called “Da Work.” Searching Google for that address brings up a Pre-Owned Car Dealership called “Clean Cars.” (http://www.cleancarsnashville.com/) On the left is a link to Company Info and another link for Our Team. It looks like a Nathan is the Assistant Manager there. (http://www.cleancarsnashville.com/our-team/) Not 100% sure if it’s the same guy, but his Photobucket account (http://s861.photobucket.com/home/n8d615/index) shows him with a pretty nice truck. So I’ll let you be the judge of that.
As for his Twitter page, he spelled Ninja wrong in his bio. Just thought I’d be a douchebag as well. But, I’m man enough to post my name and such online for all to know who I am.
Anywho John, hope that helps you out! =) Also, I’m on Twitter as well. @dustinmathisen though that should be fairly obvious as I don’t hide my identity online. =)
OMG! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!! :-D
John P.
I sit in awe, completely amazed you could find that much information.
John,
I’ve always appreciated your work, Thank-you.
This post actually made me laugh. I’m sure you’ve heard this already and it goes something like this. “You know you’ve made it big online when someone starts to criticize you. ” I can only hope to reach your level one day. I’m not looking forward to the harsh criticism however its one of the prices you have to pay for success.
If anything welcome it, there’s more opportunity for you to write douche posts.
Keep up the good work and don’t let the bastards grind you down.
Thanks for the support. :-) Believe me, this doesn’t bother me at all. And it was a really, really weak attack. I’ve had much worse! Or actually I should say better… because as you point out, it’s just more material for the old blog here.
Cheers!
John P.
