Damn! This British news video demonstrates yet again evidence of police brutality. They claim that their investigation uncovered abuses at every level of the prison systems, and they present enough evidence in this video that I believe their claim.
This 50 minute program is NOT appropriate for children.
Let me remind people that I’m a Texan, gun owner, bladesmith, former Marine and I just don’t think anyone that knows me would call me soft on criminals. But some of the things our prison systems are doing are just plain wrong.
We refuse to tolerate abuse by our soldiers, but we tend to look the other way when it comes to those guarding our criminals because “…they’re in there for a reason.” This attitude is intolerable and is a betrayal of our country and our constitution.
People who take an oath to “serve and protect” swear to serve the public, not their own self interests. And in doing so they must uphold a level of professionalism that not only does not provoke, but sets an example for the inmates within their care.
Perhaps the widespread failings are systematic? Maybe positions in prisons aren’t rotated frequently enough, or training is too infrequent, but ultimately the culture in police and military organizations flow down from the top. As long as self-riteous dictators remain at the top of the food chain nothing will ever improve.
Winston Churchill said, “the manner in which a society treats criminals is one of the most unfailing tests of the civilization of any country.” By his definition, many already view the US as the most uncivilized democracy on earth.
