You Only THINK its Cold Outside

John P.

February 22, 2007 By John P.

IcebergOk. It’s the middle of winter, and we’re all sitting around complaining about how cold it is outside. But before you continue your whining, watch this video! This video taken in Fairbanks, Alaska (on the UAF campus) shows a pan of boiling water being thrown into the air in -45 degree weather.

The water evaporates almost instantly, and this has to be one of the coolest things you could possibly do in this kind of weather.

I have personally done this and can assure you that it is AWESOME! Showed this effect to my daughter and her friends a few years ago. Works best when the air temps hit -20F or lower.

Use a plastic container as a precaution against thermal shock when you go outside with boiling water in a hot container.

    Greenland’s naming was a scam, I’ve heard.

We did this with coffee when we were kids.

I’d like to see a Mentos bomb in this weather. Would it make a huge minty-bubbly icicle?

It’s funny because when people think of ICEland they would naturally assume it would get that cold there!

That’s awesome. Almost makes me wish it’d get this cold back here in Iceland … just so I could try that out.
