Apple Unveils Super-Slim Air laptop

John P.

February 9, 2008 By John P.

Apple AirAs many of you know, I’m not a fan of the Mac. I’m a PC power user, so I can happily do anything within Windows, and don’t find the need to feel special about myself by standing out from the crowd by purchasing a computer that has miniscule market share.

Having said all that, for those of you that have been living under a rock, Apple has just launched a pretty cool new laptop that is only about a half an inch thick. The presentation of the new machine was done in typical Apple style – that means, perfectly launched. Just watch the video to see what I mean.

Oh, and a special thanks to Karen R. at work for sending me this video!

Am a retired s/w engineer and bought my first mac in 1984. I have never owned a pc, nor will I. The OS on a pc is very different from a mac in a significant way. On a pc, all files look the same to the os. All files. It has to first read a master file to determine which type of file you asked for, and other file info before it can recognize a file type (i.e., pfd, xml, flash) before it can correctly access the requested file. Without this master file, you cannot distinguish one file from another, and lose access to all your files! The mac’s OS puts file info into the file itself, so each file contains its own description info, and needs no master file. Which would you like to depend upon? A master file which can be lost or killed, or a file that holds its own info? That, my dear consumers, was the BIG difference in basic design 30 years ago!

As long as there exist differences in our world, art and innovation are born on an hourly basis. I am a Windows user and I never felt like needing to move toward another operating system except for the times that I had to in rare academical or business imposed situations. i agree with you on the fact that one does not have to feel special by purchasing or owning an Apple product. However, these brands other than Microsoft should exist in order to cause change in technology and respectively in our lives. Moreover, the existance of different technologies will lead to competition from all parties involved from which the users will benefit eventually.
By the way, being a Windows fan does not stop me from applauding for Apple’ always-new ideas.

Everything Apple touches (nice pun in there Scott) is indeed gold in terms of style but I am not convinced that the Air will actually be top dog in terms of usability. Everything has to be bolted on.

I have recently purchased the Apple Iphone and I must say everything Apples touches is gold.

I love how they can make the best products all the time and I hope they continue too.

I love your blog and have just found it. I hope to see some great posts coming from here. :)

Smaller, smaller, smaller! Why is everything getting smaller? Some of these darn new phones are so small, I swear, I’d lose them, if I had one!

I actually liked the chunky phones from about …uh…maybe, five years ago, I think. They gave me something to actually hold onto!

Thin has a diminishing return, thin enough is probably around Sony’s size. If Steve left a little more thickness, what else could have he supplied in terms of speed, storage, etc. I appreciate their not competing on price but what if they launched a second brand that competed with HP and other PC clones on price but with the Mac OS but without some of the things that drive up the price of Apple products. Make it run my Windows software and compete on price and I will consider Macs as I am considering Linux systems now.

I was working on some of this “we-celebrate-ourself” events for different companies in Europe. After 10 minutes you just got to switch your brain off. the positive aspects were the buffet and the give-aways… hehe

    Philip,

Well, I know we live in the Internet age and all… but they only announced it 3 weeks ago! ;-)

Seriously, I was told about this only a day or two after the video was released, but forgot to blog about it. I was going to let it go, but then all these people kept telling me about it or e-mailing me about it, so finally I posted the video more or less to let get everyone off my back. Frankly, the only way I’m ever going to own a Mac is if they send me one for free.

Otherwise, I’ll never spend my own money to have to completely learn all the ins and outs of a new operating system. I’m just fine with Windows.

    John

Is their any reason why you waited so long to post this? They announced this a really long time ago.
