Spam Problem Growing – 176,000+ Caught So Far

John P.

August 7, 2008 By John P.

Well, it was exactly three months ago that I shared the fact that this blog had reached the 100,000 spam mark according to the spam fighting plugin Akismet. But it looks like in the last 24 hours the count has crept up above the 175,000 mark.

175,000 Spams Caught

76,000 spam comments in 90 days is just a little out of hand, don’t you think? So, this is why I heavily moderate comments and delete anything that looks spammy. You would have thought that maybe they would simply go elsewhere since it’s not getting through. But instead they just keep increasing.

well you should be proud. Your blog gets a lot of attention, and your PR may be responsible. Off course moderating that amount of comments could kill the patience of a priest. So why not create some measures to help you? I don’t see a captch or a math anti spam feature… That could probably help you no?

It’s your fault for creating a successful site lol. ;)

They just want to suck out all they can that will benefit them. They’re not interested in being part of the community, they just want the backlinks.

Its probably because your blog is one of the first to popup whenever spammers are harvesting their urls.

Oh yeah! That’s a great idea – there are several blogs I visit that use Disqus and I really like it!

    John,

I had a lot of trouble with spam with the default comments option in WordPress. I have since moved to Disqus and the spam count has come down very, very much. How about giving Disqus or something equivalent like Intense Debate a try?

That is so weird! I wonder if some other blog or site has listed your site as a ‘good place to get backlinks’? Maybe time to do some Google and Google blog search digging. Do you have any Google alerts set?
