First of all, to all my long time readers, thanks for your patience over the last week or so. A few of you have e-mailed or called me to let me know you were having trouble accessing the server at times… and there was a very good reason for this. :-)
Next, to all of my newest subscribers, Welcome! Hopefully by now you’ve had the opportunity to browse some of the back issues on the site to become familiar with the content and style. I promise to do my best to keep you educated, enlightened and entertained.
Although I have a fairly robust system, a series of unusual circumstances combined to deliver well over 50,000 new visitors to One Man’s Blog over the last 5 days.
Within 3 days the site was featured on ALL of the following sites, each delivering thousands of readers:
- It all began with the front page of Digg…
- …then the front page of GorillaMask.net (which brought more people than Digg).
- Next came the front page of Blue’s News…
- …then Major Geeks…
- …Mafia Blog…
- and NoFrag.
- Plus several other sites that delivered hundreds of visitors each.
Needless to say, the server was not initially prepared for the onslaught. Luckily with a little guidance from my HTMLHelp.com partner Liam Quinn I was able to make a recovery and take things in stride.
As a result of all of this, my regular readers should notice an actual improvement in the performance of the site even with the additional traffic. This is because I’ve done a lot of work on the back end code to make things faster. Pages should load quicker, and I’m working on changes which should continue to improve speeds.
Over the next couple of weeks, after I’ve optimized the coding as much as possible, I will be upgrading to a new server that offers at least three times the performance of the current one. At that time I expect everyone to see another boost in the speed of page downloads.
One final note; I want to thank each and every one of you for visiting and sharing your valuable attention. I know how many alternatives there are vying for our attention these days and I’m humbled to be able to command any attention whatsoever.
As always comments, feedback and suggestions are welcome and encouraged.
