Right Brain vs. Left Brain Test
Ok folks, I’m not sure if this is a joke or what. The Australian Herald Sun posted this Right Brain vs. Left Brain test which is nothing more than a picture of a lady spinning around.

THE Right Brain vs Left Brain test … do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?
If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.
Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.
They add the following interpretation:
LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
- uses logic
- detail oriented
- facts rule
- words and language
- present and past
- math and science
- can comprehend
- knowing
- acknowledges
- order/pattern perception
- knows object name
- reality based
- forms strategies
- practical
- safe
RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
- uses feeling
- “big picture” oriented
- imagination rules
- symbols and images
- present and future
- philosophy & religion
- can “get it” (i.e. meaning)
- believes
- appreciates
- spatial perception
- knows object function
- fantasy based
- presents possibilities
- impetuous
- risk taking
Frankly, I only see the lady turning clockwise. I find it very difficult to believe that ANYONE sees it turning counter-clockwise, much less most people! So please take a moment and leave a comment to let me know how you see it. If everyone sees clockwise I’m going to call this test a fraud…

I noticed the same thing… it was clockwise only at first — but I was able to use the feet as a reference to eventualy “see” the dancer moving counter-clockwise. I used a trick I learned in sailing — where you pick a stationary landmark on the horizon as a reference, should you lose your direction — though this was not stationary, but a reflective reference. Bla bla bla. Now I want to show this to friends and family.
shez definitely moving towards the right hand side. i mean look at her toes. the foot that is on the ground has toes in the outward direction direction and the thumb on the inside when her back is turned towards us. and shez moving towards that the thumb not towards the toes. thus shez spinning towards the right hand side, thus clock wise direction…
Hi I see her clockwise , mostly , but when I tried looking at a different aspect, she started spinning counterclockwise, , but always reverts to clockwise. fascinating
-.- its pretty simple actually. this clock-wise and counter clock-wise thing works really easily. it just depends on how u look at the picture… most of us just look at it straight so it moves clockwise but when u look at its bottom right side of the picture then move to its leg (the one that is moving) when it is facing left then u see it moving counter clock wise this whole test could be fake or might have some flaws
When I look at this I naturally see it going clockwise, however when I do a quick mathematical problem in my head she changes and works counter-clockwise. I believe that many people naturally see it going clockwise simply because they have been reading to find this blog, which activates the right side of the brain which in turn makes it seem as if it is rotating clockwise. However, if one were to clear their mind of thought and focus on math I’m fairly sure that it would change to a counter clockwise rotation.
Hey all, I see it both ways, and was gonna post that if u focus on her feet, you can change her direction.
I then realised someone made a similar suggestion (looking at her feet and shadow).
ANOTHER STRANGE THING IS THAT NOW I CAN’T TELL WHAT’S Natural.
The VERY FIRST time i looked at it i saw her spinning CLOCKWISE, but after finding that i could change her direction, I found that if i change her direction to COUNTER-CLOCKWISE and look away for various periods of time, I ALWAYS see her in counter-clockwise when i look back at her. I switched her back to clockwise and she forever remained clockwise after that.
I’ve tried this back and forth and it’s like ur brain gets switched to clock-wise mode or counter-clockwise mode… TEMPORARILY??? I dunno, but I’m leaving it back in Clockwise mode.
Tell me if it’s the same for u… or is it that ur brain switches modes by itself constantly or based on mood, stress or comfort, i dunno
Nice observation Mad Stratter…I could get her to change with much effort, but I can do it more at will by using you method. Nice “pick-up” buddy…
Yes, I too saw it clockwise first and then I could see it turning anti-clockwise. Nice one!
I naturally see it clockwise… I, too, at first thought that this was a joke; I didn’t think it were possible to see it spinning counter-clockwise (or as the rest of the world says, anti-clockwise).
Then I noticed the shadow underneath, and it appeared to be spinning counter-clockwise, and when I look up, she was spinning counter-clockwise.
By default, she spins clockwise. Only by focusing on the shadow or at her feet can I make her spin counter-clockwise. I can go from counter- to clockwise at will, but to go the other way I have to focus on her feet.
Strange indeed.
I randomly see it different ways not at all sure which is my dominant often it doesn’t even make it 360 degrees before the direction changes. looks like it does 180 one way then 180 right back the other way
Clockwise
Wow i do now get how you see it counter-clockwise. no matter how hard i try, i can only see it clockwise.
ahhhhh this is hard!!!!
CLOCKWISE RULES
Yeah I think we exhibit balanced hemispheric dominance :) I bet that you are also a highly visual learner?
It has its downside though, those with similar characteristics often tend to get confused and not appreciate their “inner being”.
I can see it both was if I want to also.
I saw it first turning counter-clockwise. But I could change that quickly to clockwise and then quickly back to counter-clockwise by will whenever I wanted. This is fun to mess with people with
I see it counter-clockwise. If I want to I can see it clockwise. But my first instinct was counter-clockwise..
lol
hmm… no offense but if ur as smart-ass as u think u are then y say “god bless u all” i am pretty sure u cant prove there is a god >..>
Thank you, kindly..No disrespect by the way, i posted that comment b4 i read up on your personal info and accomplishments..i thought you were just the original commentor..
ok people, i’ve cracked the code for all of you..took me like 10 solid mins, but i think it is now foolproof (and i’m sure you’ll comment otherwise if you feel differently) but please
AT LEAST HEAR ME OUT
**first of all i don’t even know if the info stated above is valid about the leftbrain/right brain characteristics and im only goin on the comparison of the two which is shown on THIS PAGE only..
i personally saw the chic spinning clockwise..i scrolled down and found out (according to the posted characteristics) that i am a ‘right brain’ type of person..i read the stats and concurred that these are, indeed, the way i generally think and use to process thoughts or perform actions..
then i noticed the guy who posted this page said he couldn’t see it going the other way b/c he thinks it’s impossible (because he doesn’t have the FULL SCOPE of his brain and cannot quickly switch from left to right) and he quickly ruled it out and even went as far as to say it is a fraud if there is not enough proof from future commenters to change his set, standardized simple little mind (sorry john p but you gotta watch what you say)
so here it is, i can go ahead and assume (ass out of you and me or not) that john p is more left brained than right..sounds weird b/c he said she’s spinnin clockwise..but by saying he cant see it any other way and quickly ruled out everything else, DISPROVES him being right-brained..right brained folks like myself hold tight to philosophy and religion and see the ‘big picture’
philosophy-the person who created this didnt make 34 different frames to prove a point, just for a closeminded dude named john p to have ANY reason to think its fraudulent
bigpicture-you people gotta understand that ANYTHING can be viewed in ANY different way regardless of what YOU make think..who the heck are YOU to think your narrowmindedness is correct 100% of the time..
soooo..that being said i will now give yall the equation ive come up with to prove this is most definitely not a “fraud” or a “fake”
**disclaimer..some of you lefties either dont have the intellect, patience, or faith that this can be done so if you’ve been trying to switch her and you’ve now given up and are agreeing that it’s a “fake” then try this first..if you still think its fraud after fully applying what i’m about to tell you, well maybe you should stare at the mirror for a lil while instead and ask yourself what has held you back from being an intellectual, cuz you’re pretty dull and probably have a moderate-avg IQ**
FOR ‘RIGHT-BRAINED’ SPIRITUALISTS LIKE MYSELF:
You see her spinning clockwise b/c you know that ANTI CLOCKWISE wouldnt even be a word if CLOCKWISE wasn’t the original word..that’s the way my brain saw her spinning b/c anticlockwise is always plan b to me..
to switch her to counter clockwise DO THIS (and this is gonna be MUCH easier for the righties)
she spins clockwise with her right leg elevated and her left leg planted standing straight up and down..well since we already use the right mostly, we must now look to our left (literally) to switch it to counter clockwise
stare at the ‘START’ button or the bottom left corner of your computer and watch the girl closely in your peripheral..
now you must IMAGINE!! (some lefties cant) that she is now spinning counter clockwise by focusing on her elevated spinning leg in your peripheral..shouldnt take but a sec or two, but you’ll see it..NOW be patient and let her continue to spin a couple times (peripherally only at this moment) until you’ve fully convinced yourself that she’s going counter instead of clockwise..then slide your eyes back to her PLANTED leg which is straight up and down and you’ll notice that..
ONE..her planted leg and elevated leg have switched
TWO..her direction has ALSO switched despite what you thought b4..
TO SWITCH HER BACK..
simply refer back to the right side of your brain by looking down at the bottom, right-hand corner of your screen (for most folks its where the time is) and repeat the SAME STEPS and she’ll ‘MAGICALLY’ switch back to clockwise..
hopefully this worked for you..if it didnt, go read a book or somethin and gain more knowledge..
oh and john p, you can now rest assured that DESPITE what some of these people (including YOU) think, this IS most definitely a mind trick, geared mostly toward us righties..
GOD BLESS YOU ALL..
Truly your intellect is dizzying.
John P.
it’s not fake i opened it up in a gih editor and looked closely at everyone of the 34 frames and everyone could be wiewed in 2 different ways: the left brainers wiew the ballerine from behind and the right brainers wiew it from the front but every image can be both the front or the back of the ballerine so thats why some of you first wiew it clockwise and after a few seconds you wiew it counterclockwise
I can see it both way clockwise first than anti- clockwise. I am an pre-med music major though.
No the shadow moves right to left so the image must turn the same at the top of the movement. I am in aus so maybe its the coriolis effect
I can only see it as anti clockwise. I tried for 5 min to make it turn the other way then decided it was supposed to be seen anti clockwise for most people. until i read all your msgs and realised you all saw it clockwise. i was shocked
dizzies is the first thing that happens but after a while u see the girl moving in ur head left and right cause of starting at it too much
it is super easy to make it rotate left and right
LoL, very nice test. At first I was looking the girl turning counter clockwise, but after sometime I can change it into clockwise. I can change it whenevr i want with little more concentration. But getting dizzy after few mintes. I believe left brain vs right brain is determined at the first time you see the picture.
omg i am freaking awesome i can switch the lady clockwise or counter-clock wise WHENEVER i want kind of fun but if u keep switching it for more than 5 minutes u start getting headaches =]
I see it clockwise, but my friend sitting here with me sees it turn counterclockwise. He fails to see how it can turn clockwise.
Hmm.
I saw it clockwise. then it changed and again and again. I read the comments and couldn’t figure it out but after staring some more it’s definately my brain changing the direction I still can’t figure out how. it’s not an angle or a spot i focus on.
Cunning! Looking at it normally it spins clockwise. If I read anything around the image it spins anti-clockwise.
no, i opened up the .gif and it only has 34 slides
the way it switches has to do with what angle the viewer imagines they are at:
if they are slightly below her, she turns counter-clockwise.
if they are slightly above her, she turns clockwise.
i don’t think this is fake, nor a fraud. i saw it anti-clockwise, & the way they described the left brain is exactly how i think.
i don’t think this is fake, or a fraud. i saw it counter clockwise, & the way they described the left brain is pretty much the way i think.
The first thing I noticed is that wherever she is, it’s cold! By the way, the same phenomenon occurs with my RC helicopter if it’s far away and spinning and I cannot see the details. Yeah so, not fake.
i see her moving back and forth.
I can only make the dancer go clockwise.
I cant change it to anti-clockwise, well maybe If I keep trying for a long time.
Paul is write, at first I could only see it clockwise, then I watched the foot and can force myself to see it counterclockwise, I can keep it there briefly once I switch to watching the head, but then I go back to a clockwise perception. Seems valid and pretty cool, once you allow yourself to watch it both ways.
It’s totally fake…
this is not fake i can make the picture change to turn which way i want when i want, by looking at the outstretched foot i choose which way it is going then look up to the head and it keeps going that way!!!
yea this thing is so fake. it swithes up every now and then real fast lol so dont be fooled all ya’ll out there takin the test
at first i see it counter clockwise. thats what i normally see it.
but then for a while its clockwise. and i try to remember what it looks like clockwise so i can willingly switch directions…but i cant.
and its pissing me off! ha…is this a scam? or is the last guy right?
LOL the image is only 34 frames, the animation is measure in ms not sec….
It isn’t a fraud. You will notice that the people who think it is are all highly left brain. In general people who are wholly (or as wholly as possible) left brained have poor imaginations and tend to be parochial.
My Dad (an engineer) sees this as going counter clockwise. My mom sees it as switching ever 10-15 seconds. I see it as always clockwise (I am a musician and web designer).
Also if you open this in photoshop or Gimp you will see it is 34 frames + 1 background layer and the images are sequential and do not change direction.
its a scam, a fraud.
if you stare then you will notice that breifly for 10 seconds she turns counter clockwise to make people think they can focus on it. simple, what’s next.
the image to my eyes keeps shifting for every second that passes
I am sure that the image spins around both ways.
If you stare it long enough you will see that is switches from right to left and right again.
I think it is a fraud
they did land on the moon and i will prove it before i pass, also when the lander took of it blew the flag over !!
At first I saw her spinning clockwise, but if I stare at her shadow long enough, the black image switches. I can’t time it, but it just kind of happens.
I can see it both ways. Not instantly at will, but if I think about it will change after a few seconds. The change is subtle but distinct.
I don’t like when the image loops and the internet it slow it lags a bit. And when it does that the change just happens without me thinking about it.
I see clockwise change to counter-clockwise at the drop of a hat. Frustrating.
wow. i can change the direction by will. ( it help to imagin that the shadow is turning opposite)
After 5 min practice i could switch after 2-3 turns.
koool
i see the lady turning clock-wise, but every now and again it changes to counter clock-wise then it goes back…… so ya…
What is it with all these comments!? It all simply depends on whether you view it as an upward or downward view. That’s all there is to it. Still don’t get it? Hold a mirror below a clock…
If you want to see her move in the opposite direction then
look away from the dancer and see her through your peri-
pheral vision and she does appears (momentarily) to move in the opposite direction, at least to me.
By not looking directly at something and noticing it through
our peripheral vision (akin to night vision) the brain, evidently, operates a little differently and we can preceive things differently.
chris
this is pretty amazing but she only goes clockwise for me, unless i dont look at it directly and try to focus at something on the left side then it goes counter
First time I looked, she was turning counter clockwise, then after I concentrated it looked clockwise, now I can change the way I think she’s turning when I want to.
IN FACT she spins in both directions at the same time, because it’s an animated illusion. I HAVE TESTED this way: at school, I showed the image on my laptop to 25 friends in the same time. And I said them that when I make a click sound, at a random second, each should note which direction sees her spinning. The result was that at that specific moment of time, some saw clockwise, and others counterclockwise. You should have at least 25 people to do this test.
She can any second appear in one direction or another depending how you “cached†it. It’s an ambiguous animation, inspired by the optical illusion named ambiguous image.
Click on text to see a famous one.
But I didn’t figured it out how do I change it, because the illusion has multiple triggers: when I blink for example, or focus on legs or hands.
It’s a 2 second, looped, 34 frames animated gif image type. It’s certainly not set to change direction after a while, because the animation has only 2 seconds, and then repeats. And everybody sees her spinning only one direction more than 2-3 seconds :-| . I have analyzed the image looking at all 34 frames, and I can certainly say it has no “unfair†tricks. I have opened the file with XnView, a free image viewer, after saving it on my PC (right click on her and Save as…). In the status bar you can easily see current frame, and that she loops every approx. 2 seconds. If you press shift+PageDown or shift+PageUp the animation stops and you can browse the 34 frames. Only the first has grey background, the rest is transparent. And from those frames, if you scroll them one by one with Shift+PageDown/PageUp, you will convince yourself that is a illusion and in the exactly same moment of time you could see her spinning one direction or another, only by how did you “cached” her, or looked at her. The brain interprets direction, and sometimes it changes this interpretation when you look again at this image.
Also there is another problem. To determine whether it’s CW or CW you must see an imaginary clock face. The girl plays the role of the clock-hands ax. Because of the lifted leg, some people have the tendency to see a wall clock. I mean they look from bottom, from a point of view at ground. And the majority see a horizontal wrist-clock, from a point of view on top. Well the axes of the clock-hands spins the same way at this two clocks. In this case, because of the lifted leg, imaginary wall clock moves in fact somewhere on the ceiling. Now if you put the horizontal wrist-watch next to the horizontal “ceiling” watch, the axes spin same direction, but the clock-hands are moving contrary !!! Or imagine that you stick, face to face, two wrist-watches. See the axes have same spinning direction, but one’s clock-hands go CW, and the other CCW, when you look from top. With other words if you would have a totally transparent clock, and you rise it above your head, looking at the hour through it’s bottom, you’ll see clock-hands spin CCW. So this makes one part of the difference, creating more confusion.
But even if you clearly choose one of the two options, girl still gives the illusion of one spinning direction for some time, then if you blink or look again, or focus, it could change.
And it’s so cool :-D even it’s not a good indicator about how type of person you are .
I see her turning clockwise mostly, but with a little bit of staring she can go counter clockwise for me. I have seen this before and it was the same to me then too.
I can change the rotation by either blinking or quickly looking away and looking back.
im seeing it turn both ways, sometimes clockwise and sometimes she just changes direction and turns anti-clockwise
I only see clockwise. This is very interesting. I am going to test this on some others in my family.
She turns both ways.
At first glace, she was turning clockwise, but when I looked at her shadow, her rotation became counterclockwise. I guess my brain is ambidextrous.
She changes directions for me but I wouldn’t say it is at will. It usually (but not always) happens after I look away for a few seconds and then look back.
she changes direction every once in awhile
I, too, can make the direction change, pretty much at will. Weird.
I first see her going counter-clockwise and then focus my eyes on the black and she goes clockwise…but then I can’t get her to go back to counter clockwise… weird ….
My sister and I tried to look at her simultaneously and while I saw her change direction many times, telling her exactly when I saw the change, she only saw the girl turning clockwise. I thought it was that she changes directions on her own but she said the girl never changed directions for her. hmmm. weird.
no it’s not looped to change dirrections. here why she doesn’t go in ANY DIRRECTION. she can any second appear in one dirrection deppending how you cached it. It’s an ambigous animation, inspired by the optical illusion named ambiguous image.
click on my name to see a famous one. no it’s certainly not setted to change dirrection after a while. and also i have analyzed the image, which is an animated gif, looking at all 34 frames, and I can certainly say it has no “unfair†tricks. I have opened the file with xnview image viewer, after saving it on my PC. It’s a 2 second, 34 frames animated gif.
I can see it in both directions. and assuming that I consider the dirrection only looking from an imaginary point of view at the top of her, as if you would consider seeing also from bottom gives a 2-pair directions. I mean if you would have a transparent clock, if you turn it upside-down then the direction changes counter-clockwise. but I didn’t figured it out how can I see it, because it changes when I blink for example.
sorry guys, i believe it transitions the woman and changes her direction for us
I thought this too, so I copied the gif files when I saw her clockwise and when I saw her counter clockwise. After scrolling the 34 frames in “both” files, they are identical. Therefore, at least considering the technology required to make a fake gif that can be copied accurately to the hundreds of websites this appears on, I’d venture to say this is authentic.
Some friends had shown me this before and I can only see it going clockwise! I’ve tried all the different suggestions that people have shared…and that my friends told me to try – and I just can’t see her going the other way! Crazy!
Gentlemen: I don’t know if this will help, but I have a Ham license to transmit on certain radio frequencies under US FCC rules. I read in The ARRL Handbook for Radio Communication that Benjamin Franklin was instrumental in discovering certain things about electricity one seems to be that electricity actually runs backwards from what we would preceive as the direction that electricity flows—I’m not talking about AC (alternating current) necessarily. But from what I read in that book that for whatever reason electricity actually runs opposite from what we preceive and what our diagrams indicate on electrical drawings.
Yes, I see the woman twirlling in a clock-wise direction, but that is relative to a verticlal clock on the wall. Speed up the illustraion of the girl several hundred times and you get the same effect that you would looking at spokes on a bicycle wheel or a sports car
wire wheel spinning in the opposite direction from its forward motion.
Hope this all helps. cc
clockwise, and shes hot.
i can change the direction at will.
i see it the opposite.. counterclockwise
i can see going both directions one after the other.
I see both. For a while its counter-clockwise, then changes to clockwise. I don’t think it is an optical illusion because you can focus on the foot which definitely defines the rotational direction.
She’s been around a long time (and around and around!). She’s even on Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spinning_Dancer
Q
Ok. At work while looking at it with some other folks I was able to see it turn directions. But then, when I got home and looked at it again – no dice! Still only clockwise.
Grrrrr..
John P.
I saw her counter-clockwise at first, and then about 10 seconds later, clockwise. :]
I think this is looped to change directions after a period. I’ve seen it revert back and forth a few times now. At first it was confusing, but then I finally caught it changing directions.
She goes both ways, we verified it by having several people watch her at the same time, everyone saw the changes, as well as the sort of glitch when she switches directions :)
Definitely clockwise; but if you look at her shadow on the floor, she is moving counterclockwise.
And yes, she is hot, for a shadow.
I can see her moving in both directions. The key here is to rotate your head until the figure is barely in the corner of your peripheral vision then turn quickly and look at it face on. If you do this a number of times, you’ll catch it and see it seemingly rotate the other way.
If depends on which side if your dominant brain. My first impression was counter-clockwise, then by doing what I suggest above, I saw it as clockwise.
its easy to see it turns clockwise you have to be retarded to think otherwise
I saw her initially clockwise. Easiest way to “make” her change direction is to look at the shadow of her foot at the bottom and try to see it going in the opposite direction. Works for me every time….
After initially only seeing her turn clockwise, I can now flip one way or the other at will. A blink helps the change happen
Wow, I can only see it clockwise. I’m trying to focus and see it counter-clockwise but I can’t. That’s so strange!
I think it goes counter clockwise, but someone else saidit goes both ways.
Hey!!
What a nice test.
Actually, i saw it turning anti-clockwise , and when refocusing, I see it turning clockwise….
Interesting!!
I saw counterclockwise, initially, then saw a change of direction when I read some of the text.
I now see a dancer continually changing direction.
I’m not sure whether to be pleased or worried now…
(Maybe it’s just due to a clunky wifi connection.)
I can see it going both ways after it goes for awhile so its possiable its just set on a loop to spin a certian direction and then change.
Clockwise here as well.
Agree with Vingold about glancing away/viewing with your periphery vision.
Another way though it is to glance down to the bottom and watch the foot shadow…though again I think the trick is a gentle shift in your eyes such that the image is registered/processed by different portion of the retina? Not sure.
I only saw her turning clockwise at first, but I can now make her switch directions at will.
Starting/concentrating only one her foot on the ground you may be able to make her switch directions. Also, if you look past your monitor so that she is in the periphery you may be able to detect her moving in another direction than you originally thought, then all you have to do is slowly move your field of vision until you are looking right at her and she should be going the opposite of whatever you originally thought.
And for the record, even though according to the test I’m a right-brain-emotional person, I don’t think anyone in my life would tell you that. I tend to make a lot of my decisions on logic without regard to my or anyone else’s feelings.
i see it counterclockwise
Closwise..how anti-clockwise explain please
I’ve seen this before and I can see her turning clockwise and counter clockwise…
Anyway… who cares! she’s hot :P
somewhat valid, while the simplistic “left right” categorization is these days discounted by most psychologists, there is some truth to the saying all left handed people are the only ones in their right mind…
Oh, cmon….
For a while will turn CW then the rotation will change CCW.
Look at that for at least 30 sec and you will see ;)
not true, me and my friend looked at it at the same time and it was rotating in opposite directions for both of us.
haha i saw that too.. it changes a bit quickly.. if you look at the raised arm, it is, most of the time, the left arm.. but if you stare at it, you’ll see that the right will be raised then quickly back to the left.. tricky animation..
Well I see her turning anti-clockwise. But I’m also able to make her turn clockwise when I focus on her.
