How to Install a Mini Split Air Conditioner in a Garage
Since I’m still working on my ultimate man cave, aka my Garage, one of the things I’m thinking of doing is putting an Air Conditioner in there because, well its Texas! Even though I insulated all of the walls and doors in my garage, it regularly gets up to 90-95 degrees in there. Which also makes it hard to work.
A Mini Split air conditioner is a much smaller unit than traditional central AC, and only requires two small parts. And interior fan, and an outside compressor. There are just a few basic connections, and the guys from This Old House demonstrate exactly how to install one.
I’m seriously considering either the GREE 36,000BTU (3 Ton) unit that Home Depot currently sells for $2,500. Or the Mr Cool unit on Amazon that goes for $1,800. They’re both 16 SEER, but the Mr Cool unit can be controlled via WiFi with an app!
If anyone has any suggestions let me know! The garage is about 1,100 sq ft. and I don’t need it to be freezing in there. Just comfortable enough to do my work…

Glad you are going with a separate garage system instead of trying to add ducts which some attempt. I would go with the technology leader in this market (as you do for most electronic tech) and buy a Mitsubishi H2i unit. Reliability and the ability to get service are two key factors along with SEERs in the mid twenties. One of the biggest advantages of the Mitsubishi H2i is their ability to heat with full capacity at 5F which is far superior to conventional heat pump systems that usually require supplemental and expensive heat strips starting at 40F.
