Three weeks ago I thanked everyone for their patience after a rough couple of days following a flood of traffic to the server.
At the time I mentioned that I was going to be upgrading to a new server, and also that I was optimizing the code on the site to help pages load faster. Well, I’ve purchased a new mother-of-a-server that is actually twice as big as I was originally planning on, but I’ve hit a snag with migrating the database to the new server.
In the meantime, another of my article’s has hit the front page of Digg and I’m having a very hard time keeping things going. As of 4am today there have already been over 15,000 visitors. This is even more traffic than last time, so I’m anticipating that for the next few days the site might be slow.
I’m very sorry about all this, but please hang in there with me as I’ve already got the new server and when I get migrated to it (very soon) there should be a radical improvement in performance. The only thing I have left to do is complete an upgrade of the database so that the site can run under the new version of MySQL on the big new server.
Incidentally, if anyone has any very simple instructions regarding migrating a MySQL 3.23 database to run under MySQL 4.1 I would really appreciate it. I’m having a very hard time figuring that out. Alternatively, if you happen to be a WordPress and MySQL expert (references needed) and you’d be interested in helping me migrate to the new server and set things up so I can survive heavy spikes in traffic please use my contact form to let me know and give me an estimate.
Thanks again to all my loyal readers. I very much appreciate the fact that you take an interest in my articles and I will continue to try to improve the performance of the site.
