The Coolest Airplane Shadow I’ve Ever Seen

Airplane Shadow

Airplane Shadow

Airplane Shadow

A couple months ago I took an early morning flight from Dallas to Las Vegas, and everything lined up just right on this landing.

I was sitting at the window and I noticed that our shadow was nicely tracking us and converging with the general direction we were going. (As expected obviously…) You will rarely see this because everything has to be at just the right angle. The position of the sun, the direction of the runway, the approach to the runway, and even your vantage point within the plane all have to be correct.

Anyway, I pulled out my Samsung Galaxy Tab and started videoing, and I think what I caught here is actually pretty cool. Hope you enjoy.

that is some effort to see such a shadow, I mean where can you position yourself to see it that way!

I’ve traveled extensively as a consultant (a lifetime Platinum member for AA for flying over 2 million miles) and have seen similar plane shadows over the past 15 years, but for the shadow to be as perfectly aligned as this one was (it’s like you were landing on the shadow) AND for you to get that shot was truly an amazing thing.

Nice video. Did TSA then pounce on you for operating an electronic device below 10,000 ft ? You could have brought that plane to the ground!! Oh, wait…that’s what happened anyway ;)

That’s cool. Reminds me of that photograph of the horizon that looks like a smiling face with two flying birds for eyes and the sliver of the moon for a smile. I rather enjoy photographing shadows because they are sometimes more interesting than the actual object.
