Folks, this is cool. For any of you out there that routinely go camping, fishing, to outdoor sporting events, or even like to take the family to the park for picnics – the Freedom Grill Hitchmount BBQ Grill
I really like everything about the design of this unit, from the secure hitch mount to the articulating arm and even the way the side trays fold into the unit for storage and transport. If there is anything I’d complain about though, it’s the fact that the base unit (offered at Amazon) only has one 12,000 BTU burner. That’s not a lot of heat for doing any sort of serious grilling. For example, steaks are going to take a long, long time, and you’ll never be able to sear them so they’ll come out a little dry.
However for burgers, chicken breasts, hot dogs, corn, and other transportable picnic food this thing should get the job done, and the only thing you need to take with you are some portable propane cylinders.
Now, if you are really serious about your tailgating and you’ve got the bucks to spend on it, they also build the FG-100 with the following modifications:
- Full stainless steel
- Dual 15,000 BTU burners (30k total)
- Grill cover included
- $900 price tag
Oh, and all of these grills come with a 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty.
If you want to tailgate with a complete kitchen you need to check out the gogalley. You can gril smoke, fry, boil., bake.
Hi John, actually I just came back from meeting with Home Depot in Dallas. We conducted 3 days of road trips with surrounding area stores – so look for them coming to a store near you later this spring. We have some HD stores listed on our site from an earlier trial conducted last fall that went well enough to get invited back out to talk to more stores. Currently we are not listed on their site as we have plenty of .coms selling the grills – we are more interested in getting in local retail where if someone sees the grill on the road they can get one from their local retailer the same day.
I am interested in the video blog on the grill and will follow up directly with you.
Thanks, Scott
Thanks for that update Scott. I’m very glad to hear that the burner output has increased. That is a sizable difference! 75%!
By the way, since you stopped by… I actually tried to see if there was a local place that I could take a look at one of these grills because I was considering picking one up to do a Video blog about it, but I can’t find any in Dallas.
Actually a search on your homepage came back with a few local Home Depot’s listed, but searching on the HD site returns no results for your grills. So, what’s up with that?!? No way I can do a proper review of the grill without plugging into the hitch on my Titan and cooking something for a crowd! :-)
Why don’t you guys send one down here to the John P. ranch and I’ll give you plenty of lovin’ on the old Blog. ;-) (I can’t be bought… but I can be fed!!!)
John P.
Thanks for the mention. The FG-50 (shown is the video) retails for $349 (grill and swing arm) and now comes in 20,000 BTU’s.
Amen Wilhelm! I’ve recently been quite frustrated with grill cleaning. I’ve got a big expensive grill out back with a whole lot of grates and they are very tough to clean after cooking. Plus, even though they are “stainless” they still rust over time.
At this point I’ve resorted to taking them inside and washing them in the sink by hand and then storing them indoors between uses. It seems to be the only way to protect them. :-(

I wish more effort would go into easier ways to clean grills rather than to hitch them!
I guess one advantage of transporting the grill outside your vehicle is that you and your car won’t smell like your roast.
for 300$, I would rather have a nicer grill ;)
I hope it has a back up warning system. I’d hate to see the impression of that in a parked car across the street.
Also, I was thinking it might be great to throw something on that grill and cook as you drive. The roast will be medium rare if the roads are clear and well done with traffic.
I had a clever hitch mounted bike rack once, great, but when a guy rearended me I lost 2k worth of mountain bikes. But better off than a friend who had roof mounted bikes and pulled into his garage…
I think that it’s a good idea in some regards, and mighty convenient. But I’d hate to be the guy that gets rearended with this thing attached. Instant $1000 loss and perhaps some kind of a legal troubles for extending your vehicle. You just never know in this day and age.
I am hungry for some BBQ, though!
Sorry, am I the only one who thinks this is a tad silly? To pay almost 1K and leave it out in the elements as you drive along? Not to mention the overall crassness of the concept. Oh well niche marketing I suppose hehe.
