Learn AI. Your Life Depends On It.
I’m 56. I’ve lived through two technology shifts that sorted everyone I know into two piles, and I’m watching the third one start.
The first was the PC. I knew people who decided computers were a fad, or too complicated, or something for other people. They lost jobs to people half their age, then couldn’t get the next one, and by the time they realized what happened the gap was too wide to close. Some of them still can’t fully understand the world they’re living in. That’s not an exaggeration. It’s people I know.
The second was the internet. Same decision, same result. Wouldn’t learn email. Wouldn’t build a website. Thought selling online was a gimmick. Everything they knew how to do got moved somewhere they refused to go, and the world didn’t wait for them. You cannot go back and get those years.
Now it’s AI, and I’m hearing the same speech from a new crowd. Except this time the excuse is fancier: it might end the world.
Be Afraid, But Do Something About It
Fine. The people building it say there’s a chance it goes wrong. But the real researchers on average say the odds are about 5 percent. Professional forecasters put it closer to 1. Let’s agree it’s somewhere between 1 and 10. And we’re all trying to predict the future, which has a bad track record.
If your friend told you they intend to walk into a casino and put all their money on a 5-10% bet, you’d tell them not to be an idiot.
Let’s think about this: 90%+ says the world keeps turning and AI becomes the most powerful tool anyone has ever gotten their hands on. On the other hand, sitting out means betting your entire life on the long shot. Your career, your income, your family, your ability to understand the next twenty years!
Run Both Outcomes
If the long shot hits and it kills us all, you lost nothing by learning. You’re dead either way, same as everyone else.
But if the opposite happens, you spent the most important decade of your working life mastering the thing that’s eating every industry, while the people who sat it out sit around whining about everything passing them by.
One of those people is winning like a mofo. The other is updating a resume that lacks the only skill anyone’s hiring for.
Oh, and the really bad outcome isn’t even fast! Researchers put human-level AI around 2042. That’s 15+ years of everything getting rebuilt around these tools before anything goes wrong. Sitting out doesn’t skip those years. It just means you spend them on the wrong side of the line.
What The 90 Percent Bet Looks Like
You do the work of five people. You research in an afternoon what used to take a month. You draft, code, analyze, design, and negotiate with an assistant that never sleeps and never bills overtime. You stop being limited by what you know and start being limited by what you can think to ask.
The PC did that for a few people. The internet did it for more. This one is bigger and faster than both, and the people getting in now are going to own the next twenty years the same way the early adopters owned the last forty. (PS – I’m one of them.)
This Round Is Not Different
Every wave had people who swore they were right. Too hard, too risky, too much hype, not for me. Every one of them got passed and stayed passed. Many steadfast in their stubbornness and righteous indignation.
Keep your worry! Don’t blindly trust AI! Support every sane rule anyone proposes. Worried people who understand the tool are exactly who should be in the room when those rules get written. But if you don’t know the first thing about AI, first of all, you aren’t even qualified to evaluate what you’re being told about it! And unless you master it, you are not in a position to turn it into a weapon you can use to fight it. So bottom line – you’re ethically and morally bound to master it if you want to help society, your family, and your self.
So learn it. I’ve watched what happens to the people who don’t, twice, up close, and I’d rather not watch it a third time.
Bet the 90%.
